Remarkable: Australia now has so much solar supply in the grid that at least one electricity provider has a "free lunch" plan where electricity is free between 12pm-2pm.

New blog post:https://nnethercote.github.io/2023/08/25/how-to-speed-up-the-rust-compiler-in-august-2023.htmlThe top-level Rust compiler numbers are 7% walltime reductions and 10% peak memory reductions over the past five months, but read the whole post for the full details.

Item 6 in Patrick McKenzie's essay "Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Names" (https://www.kalzumeus.com/2010/06/17/falsehoods-programmers-believe-about-names/) is:"People’s names fit within a certain defined amount of space."My parents blessed me with two middle names, so my full name is moderately long, at 28 characters. Today I booked flights on a website that insisted I enter my full name as listed on my passport, but then told me that names must have between 2 and 25 characters.

I ended up calling the airline and was told that putting my two middle initials in the "middle name" field would suffice.("Middle name" being a lie when I have two, but I'm used to that.)

Having to use IRC feels absurd once you've used *any* chat system with persistence.

TFW the motor in your adjustable-height desk stops working and you discover that the manufacturer no longer exists 😔

For anyone wondering: it's a GeekDesk v3, large frame, with a custom jarrah top.

The motor stopped working in the low (sitting) position, which is better than the alternative.

I have rewritten the Build Configuration chapter of the Rust Performance Book.https://nnethercote.github.io/perf-book/build-configuration.htmlIt's now a much better guide to all the ways you can change the performance characteristics of your Rust program without changing its source code. These characteristics include runtime speed, memory use, binary size, and compile times.Big improvements to your Rust program's performance are possible with simple changes. Try these things out!

There is also a new section in the perf book that explains how you can read a file line by line without doing any allocations, which can be a nice speed win.https://nnethercote.github.io/perf-book/heap-allocations.html#reading-lines-from-a-fileThanks to Shnatsel for telling me about that one.

I've seen this excellent cartoon multiple times before, but I only just realized it can also be interpreted as a trans joke.

I also wonder about the significance of the placement of the "after" side on the left.

Product idea: a "full-spectrum" hot sauce that includes all the different "spicy" ingredients:- chili (capsaicin)- black pepper (piperine)- Szechuan pepper (hydroxy-alpha-sanshool)- ginger (gingerol, etc.)- garlic (allicin)- horseradish/mustard/garlic (allyl isothiocyanate)- cinnamon, maybe (cinnameldahyde)It would give a breadth of spiciness, rather than just packing a ton of capsaicin like a lot of hot sauces.

Two thumbs up to docs.rs for having a URL schema so simple that going directly to the docs for a crate is trivial.E.g. want the docs for crate `foo`? Type in `docs.rs/foo` into the browser's address bar. No searching required.

(And yes I know about keyword search shortcuts, I have them set up for several other sites, I like that docs.rs doesn't need one.)
