@kfogel Google went from "Don't be evil" to seeking totalitarian control over the web. Also, from "ads are a bad business model for search engines" to making a browser where ads can't be blocked.

From @ratfactor 's blog posthttps://ratfactor.com/leaving-github> Independent FOSS developers do not owe anything to companies, including the slightest effort to "secure the software supply chain" for "consumers." As the licenses say, THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND …As somebody else on fedi once said, we ain't part of your corporation's supply chain because you didn't sign any agreement with us to that effect.

You will find me obsessed about CryptPad for a few days. I am at DebCamp trying to evaluate the feasibility of packaging CryptPad for Debian and bringing it into FreedomBox.

@ged I am doing some initial analysis.CryptPad 5.4.1 and its dependencies are 392 unique npm packages. Our of this 167 packages are missing in Debian. Another 67 packages are available but not at the exact version required (not a problem if they are at least at the major version since Node follows semver).

I have come to the conclusion that #Debian is not good for packaging applications software, but it's great for systems software. I will continue to search for alternatives that work well with the requirements of #FreedomBox.(I expect anybody who replies to this with a contradiction to accept the challenge of Debian packaging a full NodeJS application in a reasonable amount of time and keeping up with the updates.)(1/2)

It's the 2010s & 2020s. Humans keep finding new ways of wastefully burning more carbon than ever on over-hyped scams, while the climate crisis worsens. As one scam loses ground, another takes its place. :blobcat_thisisfine: #Metaverse #GenAI

In the previous decade, a lot of applications for which a simple relational database would've worked well were built on the blockchain instead to leverage the hype surrounding it and obtaining VC money.I am starting to notice a similar pattern now. Generative AI will be used unnecessarily and indiscriminately at a high carbon cost that will be externalized to the future generations.

Most of the innovation under capitalism is about a minority of the population devising new ways of capturing the value created by the majority. :blobthink:

Would you get into self-hosting if I managed your server for you?I am willing to offer fully managed FreedomBox servers if there is enough interest. I want commitment from at least 10 people to kick-start the service. Here is my pitch: https://njoseph.me/managed-freedombox.htmlIf you are interested in this, please DM me your email address. I will send an update once I am ready. Please note that this service is an idea right now. I can set it up in a few days. Please boost!#FreedomBox #selfHosting

I maintain an Android app that doesn't get any new features. I still have to keep upgrading it once in a while. The amount of deprecations I have to deal with is crazy. It takes a day each time I touch the app to just get it working with the latest Android Studio. I am not even fixing any bugs or adding features. All this running just to stay in the same place. Now ask me if I will consider using cloud platform services from the same company that's responsible for Android.

A lot of malicious software is being made these days, sometimes by the biggest tech companies in the world, but the word "malware" isn't being used to describe it anymore. Most proprietary software these days has a bit of maliciousness baked in, so has it become too common to deserve a special term? Is "malware" a term from the innocent times?Similarly, "spyware". All Big Tech companies make spyware, no exceptions. We need these terms back in mainstream tech reporting.#malware #spyware

Centralization is an explicit act of taking power. Decentralization is a reactionary act of redistributing it.One can refuse to play these power games. It is possible to start from a position of not craving power. Building peer-to-peer solutions in the commons.#commons #powerDynamics #p2p

India’s repair culture gives new life to dead techhttps://www.theverge.com/tech/639126/india-frankenstein-laptops> Singh recalls a young engineering student who visited his shop last year, desperate for a laptop to complete his coursework. “He had saved up for months but was still short of money. I put together a machine for him from spare parts, and he left with tears in his eyes. That is when you know this work matters.”#rightToRepair

@sjb @wolf480pl This is good advice.I maintain my work journal in a TiddlyWiki file. Use what works for you. Sometimes it can just be a comment in the code itself.

@strypey Bright Green Lies (book) is another excellent resource that covers this topic.I imagine personal computers in a world without the capitalist growth imperative wouldn't be more sophisticated than those from the 1990s. Use of computers would be utilitarian, not addictive and all-consuming.There would be an Internet of these computers, where each computer is both client and server, as originally intended. Nothing resembling a data center anywhere except in government/universities.

The new programming language I'm learning in 2025 is Zig.I want to use it for Advent of Code this year. If there's no AoC 2025, I'll do the 2023 version, since I was too busy to attempt it then.I also looked at a few other languages - Gleam, Roc, Odin and Mojo. I might try the first 3 in the coming years. Not interested in Mojo.I first wrote C when I was 12. I am too scared of memory bugs to write C professionally. I hope I don't run into Segmentation Faults with Zig. 🤞#ZigLang

The more years I spend with computers, the more I realize the importance of storing the same piece of data in multiple independent places.Note to self:Computers are computers, whether you are using them for work or for personal purposes. Your personal computers need #backups just as much as the work ones do.

Our global industrial civilization would rather let the whole planet burn down than allow some people to just eat and live without doing any "productive" work.
