@liaizon @clacke @grishka documentation doesn't stop people from writing code with bugs. we already have a thorough test suite around webfinger, including (as I understand it) test cases for separate local and web domains. But it looks like one part of this codepath was untested and had bugs in this area. I disagree that the fact that we still support it means we should add documentation telling people how to set it up. the two things are unrelated.

@liaizon @clacke @grishka our messages crossed, but mastodon's documentation isn't a spec and shouldn't be mistaken for one. just because people might come to the conclusion that mastodon's profile URIs work one way doesn't mean anything. there's more software in the world besides mastodon

@cwebber i dunno, this is a good article but there's a lot it doesn't take into account when predicting long-term epidemic spread. Every cornonavirus we know of is strongly weather dependent, and there's really interesting early evidence that the same is true of covid-19 https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3550308

@cwebber python has lexical scope...? i don't actually know of any modern language that has non-lexical scope, excluding javascript's `with` statement, which is Widely Regarded As A Bad Idea. maybe also bash?

Almost all the bail funds I looked at today were at capacity on donation, https://secure.actblue.com/donate/bailfundscovid is a national emergency response fund that promises to send the money where it's needed across the entire bail fund network. On other fronts, https://twitter.com/blackvisionsmn has been extremely dedicated about signal boosting ways to support black communities in Minnesota, and https://docs.google.com/document/u/1/d/12y7-Wa4gi8HUeFTv17gPcbMGuVX5cqIudLJmhOrq1-k/mobilebasic is a mutual-aid document compiling individuals connected to the protests who need support

I'm enjoying @1br0wn's paper, "Interoperability as a tool for competition regulation", explaining how governments can use open standards like ActivityPub to break up Big Tech monopolies. Really interesting reading, and it cites Mastodon specifically as a place where interoperability has benefits to content moderation (which is something I've been saying for years!)https://osf.io/preprints/lawarxiv/fbvxd(h/t @doctorow for linking this!)cc @cwebber

maybe we should do this on purpose. image-free fridays. just pretend it's a text-only interface

just to summarize: DigitalOcean Spaces is down, they won't say why or how long it's going to be until it's back up. I'm really disappointed in their reliability lately, especially because we chose them specifically to avoid the reliability issues that other block storage providers have. Next time, I'll make sure to get an SLA up front.

@vriska i thought it was higher but according to two random websites it's probably more like a 4 or a 5. (definitely make sure to see a doctor about it soon, but doesn't require an ER trip)

had the distinct pleasure a couple weeks ago of watching two men on stepladders try to take down a sign only to find a nearly-identical copy beneath it. I swear they audibly groaned, it was like a dril tweet come to life

accidentally including "set -e" in your bashrc is really, really funny. i highly recommend it. Maybe include a $RANDOM call to spice things up
