Which #plan9 flavours are people using on the Raspberry Pi, and which Pi models? I see people talking about both 9front, 9legacy, and vanilla. Any other options I’m not seeing? Also why’d you choose what you chose?

Well, that was easier than I’d imagined it might be. For the #plan9 #rasberrypi users here, are you running your root FS on the sdcard? Or a USB device?

There were some peculiarities with setting up 9front on the Raspberry Pi, which were not covered in the (otherwise great) 9front FQAs, so I wrote up my notes in setting up on a Pi 3 B+.http://nf.wh3rd.net/plan9/9front-raspi3.txtLet me know if there are any mistakes or misconceptions there, I'm still feeling my way around here.#plan9 #raspberrypi

@khm I wasn’t sure how much the FQAs wanted to cater to Pi users. The main disconnect is that the FQAs talk about how to install the system, while the Pi images provide an already installed system. I read the inst/* scripts to understand what they do, and applied those changes manually. The most confusing thing for me was that “9fs 9fat” doesn’t just work, you have to nominate the dos partition, and even then it’s a pi-oriented variant with cmdline.txt instead of plan9.ini.

Just updated my guide from acme over sshfs. So much harmonious facility in #plan9.

@BarrenPlanet @ieatkillerbees @mwop the obvious reason why language models won’t replicate human-like thought is that human brains don’t function very much like language models. It’s not a forgone conclusion that this path leads to thinking machines. Far from it.

A week ago I started a Go implementation of a Uxn/Varvara emulator (https://100r.co/site/uxn.html). As of last night, I have everything implemented except for audio.@neauoire and @rek's stated "implementation-first mindset" has indeed paid off - the system was very easy to implement (with some help from the folks in #uxn on irc): I had the CPU working within a day, and have mostly spent time fiddling with OS integration (screen, files, input devices).Work in progress: https://github.com/nf/nux

@bradfitz “FUSE is finicky on basically all platforms but Linux, but also on Linux“ lmao

@bradfitz why pass objects on the wire from cmd/go to cacher but store on disk when going the other direction? Seems a bit odd/limiting? Your HTTP cacher could read from network and write straight to the fd?

Did a big refactor/rewrite of parts of a key service at #work but was stalling on updating the tests. Turned out it was because the tests were too annoying to write. So I solved a sub-problem by writing a helper for creating and verifying the contents of database tables. It allows me to clearly specify the intended contents of a table by writing it as tabular plain text. (I even wrote an auto-formatter that reflows such string literals, keeping it all neat.)And then I wrote good tests. 😇

I’m hoping to open source this and some of the other bespoke stuff I’ve built over the past few years. It’s a bit tricky though because the difference between “a tool that solves my specific team’s problems” and “a tool that can help solve a lot of people’s problems” is not insignificant, and I’m not fond of releasing open source software that I have no time to maintain. Maybe I could write a series of articles about the design of it all that may inspire others to build tools of their own.

Or maybe what I should write about is the general tool-building philosophy that permeates all of the work I do. Working with more junior devs I find a lot of them don’t think to build things to make their life easier- that tools are things that are made by other people. The amazing fractal nature of software development makes the construction of bespoke tools both easy and incredibly powerful. It’d an essential part of the process, and for me one of the most stimulating and rewarding parts.

I’m writing a talk on debugging and wondering what your thoughts on it are? Where do you start? Do you have a conscious process? Or do you follow instinct?

I just released some music. 🎉“Andromeda” is a downtempo IDM track. You can listen to it on YouTube and other music streaming services (search for “enneff”).Thanks to the Hubble space telescope for the amazing cover art. https://youtu.be/MNVFpItmook
