in theory, if the fediverse actually gains traction, we'd start to see instances more tailored to particular groups of users' needs, and it being less about who else is on an instance (without rapid portability it's of limited pull) and more what features it provides to its users

communities oriented around instances only work if you have one identity (account) per community you engage with, each on a different instance, which is not workable for most peopleat some point someone will come up with channels or groups or something i guess

@tkenben @pogodon right. yes. as i was espousing, your "base id" would be the ID you have now and then you join channels/groups which is then a managed sub-identity within that context (which could be transferred when you migrate)

@tkenben @pogodon once you have a notion of a selective group of users of some kind which spans instances, you in effect create a two-tier system of identities anyway, there's <person> and there's <person within the group>, even if you don't provide a way to customise one's profile as distinct from the other, they're still conceptually two linked identities, in effect, one yours and one "managed" in the group, that is destroyed when you leave

@tkenben @pogodon but actually coming up with the mechanism for managing those groups and waiting it for it to have widespread implementation across the fediverse is the hard bit, differential identity follows naturally afterwards—until that happens, communities are tied to instances and of fairly limited value

@admin thank you for keeping it running!i’m probably going to migrate myself to a self-hosted instance fairly soon, i think, so that’ll be one fewer user to worry about ;)
