@stux my ancestors immigrated to the US from the Netherlands a bit over a century ago for better opportunities (and in one case to possibly escape family drama or shame over a bankruptcy), and while a couple generations managed to find decent success, it’s really gone downhill for my generation and later (X/millennials) thanks to things like Reaganomics

@stux it was very hard for me to understand in 2015 how there were so many people who wanted a racist buffoon from a reality tv show to be president, but I think unfortunately bigotry and xenophobia and intolerance are still very prevalent in society. I think we will be paying the price for that man’s time in office for a long time.

@stux for many reasons (not necessarily good ones) in the US the president wields a huge amount of power, and often gets away with circumventing the few limits on their power when push comes to shove. For that reason I think it’s important that if this is the system we have, that we make very sure not to let scoundrels hold the reins of power.

@stux I remember in 2015 or 2016 he approvingly retweeted something from a fan that was a direct quote from Mussolini, and people pointed out it was a Mussolini quote, and like, nothing happened. Everyone just forgot about it. I haven’t slept well since around that time.

@stux does this mean when the service is fixed up that other users on any other servers we’re federated with can do a full text search to find our toots? Or is there a setting that individual accounts need to toggle to make our toots searchable? If there’s a toggle, where would one find that setting?
