Nature does as nature does. Fiber optic cables from drones find reuse as nesting material.

I believe that the phenomenon we currently witness at apple with their obviously flawed “liquid glass” ui is the problem an organisation that employs a significantly large number of well skilled people faces when they have optimised and finished a product. The product is completed and for the foreseeable future only minor tweaks are needed, yet the workforce needs tasks. For twitter this meant feature creep, for apple this means “ui work” and “further improvements” despite no need for them. Sad.

❌ Treating software-as-a-service as software.✅ Treating software-as-a-service as a service.👌 Avoiding it in the first place.

I wonder what the resolution on modern airport luggage scanners is and if it is sufficient to do key copies.(New fear unlocked)

@foone To us, Windows 95 was only a small part of our life. But to Windows 95, we were there for its entire life cycle.

@natalie @clonejo Did you know™: in the time of 10MBit/s ethernet there used to be certain switch designs that allowed passive sniffing of traffic through activity LEDs because they were lazily wired to the tx pair and the resolution just barely worked out.Edit: found the paper, it’s about serial links. I’m pretty sure there used to be ethernet stuff too, but maybe I misremember.https://arxiv.org/pdf/2307.07043

@foone I'm a firm believer in "You don't own it unless you have opened it."

@transfers Well that's an interesting one... [whois -i ac WT1446-RIPE|grep inet]if you pick any net and look up all PTRs you'll find pretty odd stuff. Random-Word domains, cn-domains, etc.

@foone Individual hand copied pictures. Imagine that… around that time this embarrassment of riches got released… including a book to look up each file.

TIL: "If the last entry in a crontab is missing the newline, cron will consider the crontab (at least partially) broken and refuse to install it."It does so silently. I didn't know that.May this piece of information save you time.

I never applied for an amateur radio license because I didn't like the idea of appearing on an official list of "skilled" people. Until now that was a theoretical fear. One I wasn't even sure if it was warranted or just me being overly cautious. In Belarus things escalated quickly. Radio amateurs - usually recognized as men of goodwill - have been declared enemies of the state and publicly shamed and indicted for high treason.https://steanlab.medium.com/mayday-389f5713fee4

Apple used to make outstanding products. I'm currently cleaning up my kitchen and I've got this pair of shoddy logitech desktop speakers connected to a 1st gen airport express. The same airport express model in the living room is connected via spdif/aesebu to neumann studio monitors. Music playback from my mac to both speaker sets simultaneously works without any discernible delay. I can walk back and forth between the rooms and they are perfectly in sync. That's 2004 hardware - running netbsd.
