Saddened to think about how much infrastructure relies on the whims of an unstable leader. A group of US auto-makers recently agreed to switch their cars to the Tesla Supercharger standard. Now Musk has laid off the *entire* supercharger team, putting the future of EV charging at risk.https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/3/24147402/tesla-supercharger-layoffs-stalled-ev-infrastructure-projectsFortunately, a new firm supported by auto makers plans significant investments in chargers: https://www.utilitydive.com/news/ionna-ev-charging-joint-venture-nacs-ccs-bmw-honda-gm/707513/

What does it mean for a company to "know" that their products are harming people, how do corporate scientists convince themselves not to look at the truth, and how does that change? Stop what you're doing and read this *extraordinary* story right now by Sharon Lerner for ProPublica and the New Yorker.https://www.propublica.org/article/3m-forever-chemicals-pfas-pfos-inside-story

"Opal Lee, the 97-year-old Texan known for her push to make Juneteenth a national holiday, was given the keys Friday to her new home, which was built on the same tree-lined corner lot in Fort Worth that her family was driven from by a racist mob when she was 12."https://apnews.com/article/opal-lee-new-house-racist-mob-texas-549697c3f027e58d68c040d3a0387510

(Please share) Do you use encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, or Element? And have you faced challenges/frustrations related to privacy, encryption, and moderation?CAT Lab is launching a new study to collect & share anonymous stories about people's needs and challenges with encryption/moderation — to better inform design and policy debates that seem stuck on safety vs privacy.Website & Survey in EN & ES:https://opcandado.citizensandtech.org/

Today when explaining open source and free software for the first time to a student, I also had to explain that Richard Stallman is NOT safe and any organization that hosts him is also not safe.It pains me that so many organizations enabled Stallman for so long, more interested in protecting abusers than advancing software freedom. The Free Software movement didn't have to be Omelas, and many good people fought for it to be better, but that's what the FSF chose. 😢https://stallman-report.org/

What's it like to live in a society with secret police aided with tips from your neighbors? A book that shaped my understanding as a student was "The File" by Timothy Garton Ash, about the ordinary people who added to his secret Stasi file in the 1970s.It's an extraordinary book about times when fear, deprivation, yearnings for a better life, & despair drive people to turn on each other — and what it's like to live with those neighbors in the aftermath of such times.https://atlantic-books.co.uk/book/the-file/

"The original typewriters were designed for the Latin alphabet. Conceived with little regard for the non-Western world, the technology’s proliferation served Western hegemony.""Languages with non-Latin alphabets were forced to contort and comply with the alien instrument. The Chinese script, unreachable with an alphabetic keyboard, was castigated as incompatible with modernity"Amazing story about a unique typewriter thought lost & its place in cultural history. https://madeinchinajournal.com/2025/05/02/lost-and-found-the-unexpected-journey-of-the-mingkwai-typewriter/

I guess organizations publishing high stakes documents are now going to have to hire new copy editors and fact checkers to verify everything they publish to manage the risk of AI generated errors?(Right….. right?)

As the U.S. heads toward a second era of patronage, spoils, and corruption, I am continuing to learn from the history of the progressive movement and its failings. Watching this doc on Women’s right to vote and the tradeoffs on racial justice made by white women activists: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/vote/Also reading this book on the way that progressive politicians relegated Puerto Rico to less than American status https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691231273/puerto-rico

Today I looked up a fabricated social media post about a celebrity, and Google's generative AI summary claimed, based on a hallucinated Snopes article that doesn't exist, that it was a fabricated meme.I am so tired.

Recent US cases involving civil liberties, immigration enforcement, and religious freedom hinge on claims about chilling effects - which cause people to avoid speaking up, showing up, or connecting with others in ways that are protected by the Constitution.https://citizensandtech.org/2025/07/civil-liberties-science/

We're seeing sophisticated AI & data systems generate ambiguity & fear about unconstitutional uses of state power. At this session, you'll learn how tech is being used, ways that science helps us understand how tech affects rights, & how science helps us protect those rights with or without courts. If you're a funder, organizer, lawyer, scientist, or some combination of the above, you can expect us to ask you to help on this urgent issue. <3
