@liaizon not that I think IP law will save us or anything lol, but the ACSL at the very least makes the statement that the things we are making are not intended for everyone, not intended for capitalists or agents of the state. FOSS is stuck in the nonsense position that if everyone just shared code the world will automatically become better. we've run that experiment and that clearly doesn't work.

as people stress about the longevity of community-run digital spaces lets not forget that centralized corporate controlled platforms are no savior either.this is a PR i took out 10 years ago against openframeworks with images hosted on github documenting my patch. at some point in the last decade they changed how image hosting worked and now the most crucial bit of my documentation is a couple of broken links.

the playbook is pretty obvious at this point. start offering a free service, get buy-in, become indispensable and then put up paywalls. people will then either pay or accept the death of their stuff. this bait and switch is grotesque. i am thinking of the heroku free tier that is disappearing, and taking *a lot* of my stuff down with it, but also of docker hub and twitter which has flirted with burying the content of non-paying users...

thing is, i dont mind paid services! but if heroku was paid from start i would have approached it differently from the start. observable is similarly shedding their free tier soon i think. again, i understand that hosting costs money and that devs need to get paid.... its just the runaround sucks. now i need to think about migrating my shit and fixing broken links on a timetable set by some VC money perverts.

i think i am extra frustrated because if these "free" platforms were up front, say, ten years ago, i may have invested more time into self hosting and other more long-lived solutions. but i didnt because i was basically lied to, and now i have to scramble. decent engineering is impossible under capitalism.

* a first person shooter -- you go back in time and shoot the first person, saving the world from the plague of man* everyone is on a team indicated by the t-shirt they are wearing. the only weapons are t-shirt guns which instantly change the team affiliation of the target by changing their t-shirt* a normal shooter but it formats your harddrive when you die* staring contest. no guns, only eye contact. but be careful -- you have to blink sometime!

in the early 2000s Yuri Mrakadi's shtick was singing very western inspired pop music in prefect classical arabic. this is unusual because classical arabic is reserved for high poetry and the news, pop music is usually sung in the colloquial arabic that you'd speak on a daily basis.anyway if you're in the mood for an EXTREMELY early 2000s music video complete with frosted tips, heavy mini cooper product placement, and scenes from the Beirut i grew up in please enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiltnPZ8LVU

noodling on an entity component system implementation in modern C# inspired by https://github.com/skypjack/entt. i have the basics working: versioned entities, packed component storage, ref returns to enable mutability and avoid copying, few other things.this snipped creates entities with Vector3 components, iterates through them multiplying their X by 10, adds a Magnitude component where the vector's length is greater than 9.5, then iterates through every entity with a Magnitude and prints some info

does anyone have experience converting a heavily glitched out analog video signal into HDMI?I'm experimenting with a fucking up NTSC signals during my live coding visual sets and everything works fine and looks great on a CRT but ideally I would need to convert the signal into HDMI to plug into a projector at a venue. the cheap AV to HDMI converters I have basically "give up" if a signal is too glitched and I'm looking for an approach that is more forgiving, if that's the right term

i love "i18n" as short for "internationalization" because nothing telegraphs "we consider this a burden and dont really care about it" like "i cant be fucked to type out all the letters"
