I wrote about a Mondrian theme for KDE Plasma back in early 2021. I used it until I switched from Plasma to XFCE for my workstation in the summer of 2021. However, things come full circle. While I still use XFCE on my workstation, I use Plasma on a mini PC I designated for PC usage and have added some pieces of the Mondrian themeto my set-up.https://thenewleafjournal.com/reviewing-the-mondrian-theme-for-kde-plasma/#KDE #KDEPlasma #Mondrian #Desktop #Aesthetics

@frank Thanks for the recommendation, it looks interesting. I added it to my list for my next order from Thirft Books. I have a few NY history books on my itinerary.

@splitshockvirus Well-played, took me a longer second to see what you did there than I'd like to admit. I'm not sure how to replicate the whole answering the phone mechanic in Steins;Gate though (could be because I've made it my life's work to not make slideshows).

@jqheywood I considered Juris-M, the book I used to solve that Zotero issue was actually by the Juris-M project. I went with Zotero in the end because (1) my primary use-case is general bookmarking; (2) Juris-M's extra features look welcome and I hope they make it into Zotero, but I don't think I NEED them; and (3) absent a more compelling reason for my use-case, I prefer to go with the base application instead of a fork, especially since I'm using Arch User Repository packages.

Back in January 2022, I wrote a dialogue (using fictional characters) explaining why I was moving the NLJ off Bluehost shared hosting to a small VPS server. Nostalgic, and in terms of site performance... definitely turned out to be the correct decision.https://thenewleafjournal.com/slow-leaf-journal-outgrowing-cheap-hosting/#WordPress #WebHosting #VPS #Bluehost #Dialogue

@OutofPrintArchive I played too much Pen Pen Triicelon back in the day. I got a Dreamcast close to launch but for whatever reason (probably sold out) did not get Sonic Adventure until a few weeks later. Thus, Pen Pen was initially my only DC game. Pretty fun and the graphics looked amazing compared to N64.

@OutofPrintArchive I thought of it when I saw Fall Guys but my friend sadly didn't get the reference. I vaguely recall the US magazines I read at the time gave it middling reviews but I agree it was fun and intuitive to pick up and play.

I published my third annual review that was of the year in anime. In the article, I ranked what I think were the six best series of 2023, included notes on 12 additional series, and gave out five category-specific awards. I made sure to get it done close to New Years because I know the whole industry was waiting for this.https://thenewleafjournal.com/2023-anime-year-in-review/#Anime #AnimeReview

@kevincurry Thank you much for sharing my article and for the interesting write-up. I'll note I agree 100% with your fifth footnote that while cycling has a big doping problem, many other sports with big doping issues (NFL is a good example) are barely scrutinized. I remember seeing silly arguments in the 2000s to the effect of NBA players wouldn't benefit from doping because they'd put on too much mass. There's a pot-kettle element to some of the criticism.

Wrapping my my recent string of classic (or replica classic) Nintendo controller on Linux posts, I discuss a snag I hit and overcame. I was playing Pokémon Red on Lutris. I configured my NES 2 controller in RetroArch. I could not figure out how to map it in Lutris. Instead, I figured out how to copy the config from RetroArch to Lutris' Libretro core directory. Perhaps hacky, but it worked in a pinch. (If you have a better solution, do tell.)https://thenewleafjournal.com/copying-retroarch-controller-config-to-lutris/ #Lutris #RetroArch #Linux

@Piejacker875 That would be neat project, especially if it supported different classic controllers. But I didn't find anything doing a few quick searches -- seems to be all USB adapters or modding non-NES controllers with the NES port.

The news about a Saudi Arabian company acquiring Pokémon Go reminded me of stories from the early 2000s about Saudi religious authorities "banning" Pokémon. In a research-type article, I look back at the original 2001 Pokéban and examine the peculiar history of Pokémon in Saudi Arabia.https://thenewleafjournal.com/pokemon-and-pokemon-go-in-saudi-arabia/
