       I got to know something.  And it is fascinating.Why do we know that fungi are not animals or plants?They are not plants because they do not photosynthesise, that is, they are heterotrophs and feed on organisms that do (that is why they can grow on decomposing matter)They are not animals, because they have a cell wall (animals do not) but their cell wall is not made of cellulose;  it's chitin, the same substance found in the exoskeleton of many insects!

       I wonder if that is why the taste of mushrooms is similar to meat. And fungi are not only mushrooms, but also mold, (that stinky green that forms on rotten fruit and bread, but which penicillin has happily given us) and yeasts (for making bread!)
