Hello! I am a scientist and parent looking to chat with folks about the future — the scary parts and also the hopeful parts. I'm interested in #permacomputing, the small internet, and doing more with less. I've been writing at http://degrowther.smol.pub/ and more recently sharing stuff at http://retrace.club/~mycorrhiza/. #introductions

Success! Work in progress on the cover of a zine I'm making.

I’ve finally gotten to the bottom of the problem with using my person domain with Protonmail: their “verification” process doesn’t work if your domain name has any other CNAME records (e.g., if you’re using a CNAME to redirect web traffic, as I am). This is a serious shortcoming and I’m considering using a different mail host. Does anybody have any recommendations?

This summer I’m going to become one of those people who intuitively understands how dew points map onto weather conditions.

A thought which I haven’t fully worked out in my head yet is that a true “permacomputing” practice would come along with an acknowledgement that perfect, indefinite, preservation of all recorded information isn’t possible, and might not even be desirable?

My (large) employer is considering a move to the cloud, and I’ve become quite skeptical that the centralization of IT infrastructure saves any energy. Sure, if we were talking about code running on bare metal, putting all the servers together would probably represent some energy savings. But that’s not what we’re doing of course — we’re running (incredibly inefficient) code, in containers, on virtual machines, just to support this “centralization”.It’s not lost on me that there’s a parallel to the State here. Think of all the wasted energy that goes into supporting a huge bureaucracy... just so some hack in DC can make decisions that will affect my life much more than they’ll affect theirs. What’s the carbon cost of a Supreme Court?

@urusan Do I get to have a dumbphone and a computer in this universe where I can't have a smartphone and a full-sized computer?

Hanging out with a baby all the time really does help one appreciate that “playing” and “learning” are fundamentally the same thing.

@urusan My most relevant experience in this domain is with scientific data: experiments, simulations, etc. The create-only/immutable-ledger approach to this phase of "data management" has the advantages of both being a more faithful record of "what the !@$#$ happened" and easier to implement in a fault-tolerant manner (if things are moving slow, I just open a file in append mode and close the handle with every update; if things are moving fast, I make sure to flush output buffers often).

@urusan @wizzwizz4 @proactiveservices example.com is a member of the placeholder pantheon, with "foobar" and "lorem ipsum". I wonder what else is there?

Ok so all the coolest instances that I can think of are closed to registrations right now. And I get it! But if we keep telling people to join Mastodon, and that picking a cool instance is the key to enjoying the network, what the heck am I supposed to tell my friends right now.In other words (now that I've gotten that off my chest): where should I tell my coolest friends to sign up? I'm talking about the best weirdos I know who are all creative, anti-capitalist, queer, etc.

I wish that more hobbyist/DIY/open source hardware projects were build around old laptops (ubiquitous, free or extremely cheap, prevents toxic waste from going into a landfill, combines computation/display/input/power in a convenient form factor) and not RaspberryPis (difficult to source, expensive, produces CO2 creates new future e-waste, weirdly pro-police, requires separate display/input/power).I’m looking squarely at you, #3DPrinting community.

I’m going to do more of this in 2026: I just finished my first attempt at darning / #VisibleMending. It’s obvious that I didn’t know what I was doing here, but I had fun and I feel like I got less-bad as I went along. Kids destroy pant knees and I’m tired of throwing away otherwise fine jeans due to a blown out crotch or worn-through pocket.(Obligatory “this is proof I have the patience to stab something 4,000 times.”)
