       Keeping Mastodon non-toxic & benevolent requires total community buy-in when it comes to moderation. Yes, we have mods + admins. But we must also habitually practice individual moderation using the robust safety tools at our disposal.This means blocking clear-cut trashbags AND reporting them to adminsThis means also reporting trashbags to the trashbag's own home instance admins. It means calling out bad actors early and often & sharing information via #FediBlocks & boosts.

       I've seen every iteration of "I hope [one of Bluesky/Threads/Mastodon/Xitter] wins the social media wars over [one of Bluesky/Threads/Mastodon/Xitter]." When you're rooting for social media companies to "win" by having a total monopoly on your free content, you've already lost your way.

       @wjmaggos I think Mastodon is lumped in by a lot of folks, because it's ostensibly social media. But I wouldn't lump it in because it's not really the same ethos. Twitter/Bluesky/Threads/Spoutible/HiveSocial/and even Facebook I would group together.

       @futurebird I also like that this normalizes my own relationship with social media and what I perceive as healthy. If there's an option for people to tune me out, I don't get creased about it! I may not be for everyone, or may not be for everyone *all the time* so I don't worry why people do or don't engage with me. Twitter really made me care about that at a v toxic level.

       How to (kinda) turn off Gemini AI in Gmail:• Go to "Settings"• Go to "General"• Scroll down + unclick all boxes labeled "Smart Features & Personalization" (For me there were two boxes to unclick)Once I did that I rechecked Settings & found that no less than (10) different categories deployed AI.I say "kinda" because it's all or nothing opt-outs. Not just the newer Gemini slop no one wants, but stuff many people already use like spellcheck & autocorrect & other features already in place.

       You have to do this with each separate account you have. And even after you disable the above, AI will still automatically show you prompts to "polish" or "help write" your emails with some goofy cursors while composing. And there isn't any way for full user opt outs at this time.Google just force-installed Gemini AI onto Gmail and Google Drive etc etc. Brutal.
