Twice this year, I've read books that use "skeleton key" to mean any old-fashioned key (I think the technical name for those old-school locks is a ward lock). Is this a mistake or a new usage? When I was a kid, skeleton key meant a key cut down to the bare minimum dimensions so it could open many locks, basically a lockpicking device (or, occasionally, a master key) #AmWritng @grammargirl
