When it comes right down to it, most tech is anti-innovation. It creates a habit of relying on one method to solve problems.For example, this creature does not have anything with GPS. It's not on a phone, it's not in a car, it's not in some other device.When it gets lost, it retraces its steps. It contemplates landmarks. It looks for familiar streets. It stops at a gas station to look for a map.When it travels with friends & their GPS goes out, those friends pull over & futz with their phone until it works again. They often get quite upset & distressed.It has been briefly "lost" so often in its life that it almost never feels distressed about it. It just rolls with it.LLM provides a similar trap. If all your problem-solving relies on the tech, then you will be ill-equipped to solve problems when the tech goes down. If that is the primary way in which people make meaning, then all of meaning becomes a blue screen of death.

The current US energy secretary, a so-called "climate realist," has said, "“You can’t make a windmill, a solar farm, a nuclear power plant or a hydroelectric dam, for that matter, without oil and gas,” & that is true.Newer, "alternative" energy sources do not break decisively from the mode of fossil fuel production, but are in fact products themselves of the fossil fuel economy.Oil producers over the last 20 years have grown increasingly frantic over finding & extracting the substance: "conventional" peak oil was reached in 2006. Every technology required to extract oil from that point onward has grown more expensive. The so-called "unconventional" extraction, including fracking, has kept the fossil fuel industry & its capitalist mode of production alive, but at higher costs & with diminishing returns. From Wikipedia: "All the easy oil and gas in the world has pretty much been found. Now comes the harder work in finding and producing oil from more challenging environments and work areas." — William J. Cummings, Exxon-Mobil company spokesman, December 2005"It is pretty clear that there is not much chance of finding any significant quantity of new cheap oil. Any new or unconventional oil is going to be expensive." — Lord Ron Oxburgh, a former chairman of Shell, October 2008Meanwhile, as climate change stokes extreme weather events, the extraction & production facilities sustain more damage & need to be rebuilt, soaking up more resources. Time, money, & oil that could have been used to fuel production & consumption have to go back into replacing the machines that do the fracking, drilling, & refining.According to Forbes in 2023, "Nearly half of the total petroleum refinery capacity and 51% of the total natural gas processing plant capacity in the United States is along the Gulf Coast." This makes operations subject to tropical storms both on land & at sea. Higher temperatures impact refineries, which are designed to operate inside the climactic norms in which they were developed. Any breakdown in equipment needs to be replaced by equipment that, somewhere in its production, was created by fossil fuel.Eventually it will no longer make economic sense to rebuild a platform or a refinery just to extract the oil needed to rebuild it again next year. Eventually the reserves will run dry. You only rearrange a straw in your cup of soda so many times to suck the nectar out from the bottom before it's not worth it any more.It's basically over. Climate change is about to deal the capitalist mode of production its first real death-blows.
