The early Church was remarkably technologically savvy. Paul used the Roman transport system extensively and referred a lot to the culture of his day. Christians were some of the first to use codices, which laid the foundations of modern books. Christians also became famous for being fans of literacy for all.Maybe, just maybe, this is a sign that we should look at all the technological means possible to disciple people.#fedichurch #church #discipleship

Hello, #fedichurch, and #theology people, I have a big request. I am currently running an independent research project on how #churches are meeting the language needs of their communities (or not). I would be really pleased if those involved in churches as leaders or congregants or #ChurchInterpreters could fill in this 5-10 minute survey, no matter what your church is doing:https://bit.ly/Church-Lang-Survey(opens in a Google form)The survey explains what will happen with the results. Results will be published and will also be used to create targeted (free!) resources for churches. Please could you also pass it on to any churches you know. I would prefer it wasn't pushed publicly on places like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, where it could end up being stuffed by bots but Mastodon, email and stuff like Whatsapp/Telegram/Signal is totally fine.Tagging some people who might be interested:@Peternimmo, @peterwebster, @ChiaChatter, @fuat2mb, @RevEricBurrowsStone

Moves of God do not cease to be godly because people criticise them for not looking they way they would want them to look.

Jesus both loved people for who they were and called for repentance. I'd like to suggest that different Christian traditions tend to favour one of those sides. But loving people without calling for repentance leaves people stuck in sin. Calling for repentance without loving people is judgmentalism.God's kindness leads us to repentance. We need both. The tricky question is: how can we make sure that we don't get stuck on only one side?#Jesus #church #fedichurch

@grammargirl Why does the verb "to table" mean opposite things in US vs UK English and what does it mean in Australia?

Out of nowhere, a memory popped into my head and the more I think about it, the more inspiring it is.My dad died pretty suddenly when I was 17. I am blessed to have lots of happy memories of him.Recently, I've been thinking about how much joy he got from listening to a vinyl single made by his mate, V (name redacted for reasons that will become clear) at some point in the 70s.Let's just say that the other five of us in the family weren't huge fans. As soon as that record came on, we'd find somewhere else to be. But my dad would be lost in the music, whole body moving in time with it.For me, even the titles of those songs (yes, there was a B-side) makes me think of 12-string guitars with rainbow straps, untidy beards and booming laughs. For my dad, those songs probably made him think of time with his mate, who he hadn't seen for years by the time I heard him play the record. And he genuinely thought it was great music. Why does this inspire me now?I write books. I'm often tempted to feel down about sales numbers or about the fact that I haven't really done anything that has gone viral. But I doubt V ever signed a record deal. I'm not sure even if he even sold the entire run of his single. But my dad bought one. And he loved it. It meant a lot to him.It doesn't matter that V never played on Top of the Pops or Hit Parade. He had one fan in Scotland and his music meant so much to that one fan.I'm pretty sure that if my dad and V met in heaven, my dad would ask V to sing those songs again. I'm tired of trying to attract the crowds. Hoping for a bestseller is not a healthy strategy. From now on, I work for the few:- For the people I love and who love me,- For the people my work touches, - For the people who will keep coming back to my work, even if everyone else has cleared off, - For the God who loves me and gave Himself for me. Today, sing your song, bake your cake, write your book, do your talk, shape your pot, not for the faceless crowds but for the few who really matter. And for you, because you matter too.

A bit of #philosophy for today. Is it theoretically possible to build a computer that can deliver perfect interpreting on the basis of external information (no mind reading): https://jonathandownie.wordpress.com/2023/05/17/the-biggest-questions-about-interpreting-and-machines/#1nt

I was thinking about #influence today. In a decade or so, most of the popular and debated theology books and Christian Bestsellers will be only available from second-hand bookshops and specialist libraries. In a week or so, that viral tweet or popular toot will be all but forgotten. But 408 years ago, a man called Nicolas Herman was born in an unremarkable town to a peasant family. Much of his adult life revolved around doing dishes in a French monastery. As far as we know, he never wrote a single book, nor did he go on a promotional tour. But he left a deep impact on people. So much so that, after his death, letters he has sent were collated into a book. This book, The Practice of The Presence of God, published under the name of Brother Lawrence, the name Nicolas took in the monastery, is still read today and still affects people, hundreds of years after he died. One ordinary man's peace and desire to always be close to God affected generations after generations. What does that mean to me?I would rather chase what God says is meaningful than what the world rushes after. I'm probably not going to influence generations like Brother Lawrence but I can influence my family and I can seek the Kingdom first, just like he did, and just like Jesus told us too.#theologadon #theology #books

@grammargirl What's her opinion on the interrobang? What's her view on punctuation change in online writing, where it seems to mark prosody and sarcasm more than grammar?

Since some lovely new people now follow me on here, I would like to ask for some help.I am currently running a global survey of how (and whether) churches are meeting people's language needs. You can find it here:https://bit.ly/Church-Lang-SurveyIt opens in a Google Form and explains what will happen to your data on the first page. All of the data that isn't personal will be open, to allow further research. The results will be used for research and to create specialist resources for churches. Please could you take the 5-10 minutes to fit it in and share it with any Christians you know? I am particularly interested in what churches in the Global South are doing as most responses so far are from Europe/UK/USA.#church #churchgrowth #theologadon #theology

Never allow your #theology to be so fixed that God can't change your mind.Never let your theology become so flexible that the enemy can blow you off course.

English really could do with a singular "you" and a plural "you".

I hate to say it but using Pi OS to set up a Pi Hole has me seriously wondering if my next computer should dual boot to a Linux distro.
