@zudn i haven't found lists on mastodon yet? I meant if the workflow had "public" or "choose followers to share this post with" instead of "public, unlisted, followers or direct" Would it force quality over quantity - because it would encourage thinking about who you are talking to, actually, and whether it's appropriate? And laziness means people wouldn't just broadcast everything

So far, Melbourne has had police checkpoints, a curfew, a $200 fine for anyone refusing to wear a mask, a $1600 fine for anyone caught more than 5km from home, work permits, the defence force patrolling the streets and cops using drones. Now they're trying to being in arbitrary detention and arbitrary removal of kids for months or years ... And if Fiona Patten has cut a deal to support this in return for laws against chaplains ... we might be sunk https://caldronpool.com/pre-crime-victorian-government-pushes-for-powers-to-preemptively-arrest-anyone-even-if-they-havent-broken-the-law/amp/

If anyone's looking for me, I'm deep down a rabbit hole trying to figure out if using Tesla's 1917 turbine design would make household pumped hydro a realistic theoretical possibility ...

Does anyone know if there's a fediverse platform that's geared to semi-closed communities?I think it would be helpful to have an ability to create "child" accounts, which can't post publicly and have parental limits on what feeds/users are there to follow and search on. This would mean being able to set up a family Fedi server and pull the aunts/uncles and grandparents over to the fedi, while being able to give our kids a version of social media with training wheels

I mean my other choice seems to be letting a kid on facebook, and hoping they don't publicly endanger themself etc. Plus i don't trust facebook to honour my kid's privacy and let them make mistakes and do dumb things without exposing them to the www (or keeping it)But i really want them to be able to talk to relatives and build those relationships, as well as with other adults as they see fit. It takes a village, but thanks to covidsafe and childsafe guidlines it can be hard to facilitate

@daniel that might be a way to do it. I know you can block other servers, can you have parent/child or restricted account types? And can you prevent specific users from posting publicly? If e.g. grandparents could still follow and interact with stuff they were interested in, it might be a bridge to the wider fediverse

Today I'm giving thanks that Mastodon/Pleroma is designed by users and admins... and not businesses. I've been reading how FB is engineered to be addictive ... and giving thanks fedi platforms allow better user controls to mute stuff you don't want to see.I'm thankful that mastodon doesn't artificially generate extra "notifications" about posts by people you don't follow, like birdsite and FB does. I'm thankful that there's so much positivity on the fediverse.

I need your help. Is there a (internet or android) music marketplace where you can browse and buy mp3s?(I was using Google Play Music to buy mp3s but that's joined the ripping-off-artists we-own-all-the-music bandwagon too as it's been rolled into YouTube )

I suspect that if it was more mainstream-able, i might be able to negotiate paying our local (regional) ISP to run a Solid node for me ... What if ISPs ran generic federated social media servers? Would the fediverse become uncool like facebook if everyone's mums and aunts and Karens are on here using names like @jjsx38266@social.iinet.com.au

Is there a list of moderated conservative / right-leaning servers? The one on joinmastodon.org is left wing only

Someone in particular needs to hear this, you know who you are:If your social media account causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to lose your accounts than for you to go into hell with all your followers #bible #nerdbible

How do you make life hard for big tech businesses collecting and profiling you, while not falsely giving the impression that you're doing something wrong? Using email with rubbish security is probably not the answer because identity thieves...

The more I think about it, the more I want a (non-silicon valley) integrated app ecosystem that helps me focus on relational tasks and skills. It's good not to rely on technology to do our thinking for us, but our tech use shapes our thinking - e.g. too much fb/birdsite and you catch yourself composing posts as you go about your day. I'd rather be training my brain to think of questions to ask people ("how did that op you mentioned go?") Rather than posts about me... #pinephone #fossapps

@tychi yes! I have read about Solid - what TB-L describes it as, sounds really promising. I hope to jump in and do some helping build, over 2021 I really hope it reaches its full potential and gets polished enough to go mainstream 🤞🤞The hard bit will be the economics of servers - mainstream are used to "free" email and platforms. Getting anyone to pay for the servers might be hard...

@tychi I suspect that one thing that might actually work for the wider population would be bundling pod hosting with data plans - phone or home internet, just like you often get a free email address from your home internet provider. That way it's linking it to existing paid services, and piggybacking on an existing trusted commercial/financial relationship For ISPs, it might be an added way to discourage churn also
