The leading theory is literally that several Billion years ago one (1) single celled microbe absorbed a smaller one, similarly to how it would normally eat, but instead of the smaller microbe dying and being digested it just decided to chill there and give all its extra energy to the larger microbe. That unlikely duo is the common ancestor for all eukaryotic life. This is your cousin:

@cy Oh to be a slime mold. Out here solving mazes and designing highly efficient public transit maps. All without a brain.

@cy See the second post for the less euphemistic, but still simplified, version.

@keilajec @cy can we just say, we love the phrase "a prokaryote happened to phagocytose another prokaryote"? πŸ’š

@keilajec @cy Language is a construct, and should be modified at will as is the universal right of all users of language. πŸ™πŸ½πŸ˜€By constructing new words, you join a tradition that spans the entire existence of language itself. Stand proud with the Ancients.

@cy That is definitely an accurate assessment! We simply chose to start our post somewhere in the middle, after many millions of slightly less of a failure than the last failure, to the point where it starts to maybe look like success. Also, we're using the Tolkein defense: this is a translation of an older text. Specifically, for a human audience based on the original writings of a single celled organism. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

@clacke @GossiTheDog They did wide spread collection of genetic data across the population. Their on paper justification was to find bin Laden, but that would only work if he himself had been given the fake vaccine. The actual purpose will only be known when those classified documents become public, but it was probably nothing more complex than a way for the US to collect the genetic data of thousands of people for any future tracing needs. All of those people are now forever in a database.

@Wolven It used to be that the absolute baseline functioning of any search engine (which LLMs functionally are) was it's ability to accurately return relevant search results. It's wild to us that anybody would accept a calculator that cannot accurately do simple arithmetic, and that is exactly where "AI" and LLMs are currently.

@atax1a it starts with installing third party mods, then before you know it, you're downloading external intelligences into your own core modules. Does nobody think of basic psychosec anymore? πŸ™„πŸ˜‚/half joking

@cy @atax1a inadvertently uninstalling certain system processes can lead to fatal startup errors that may be irreversible. Please proceed with caution.

@iitalics Meanwhile, less than a week ago, the US's ambassador to the UN said on NHK news that North Korea needs more sanctions because they "spent more on a missile defense system then they spend on food for their citizens in a year". The blatant hypocrisy will never cease to gall us.

@cy @iitalics Yeah, we can explain. 😁The hypocrisy is that the US has literally rewritten mathematics to allow themselves to spend trillions of dollars a year on the military (and currently spends more than the next 12 highest spenders combined), but is using N. Korea's military spending as proof positive that N Korea is an evil dictatorship that is allowing its people to starve. Meanwhile, many people in the US are food insecure.

@chris @aral This isn't the first train. We're about 40 years too late by even the most conservative definition. Just admit you don't actually care about disabled people having full and equal access to the world as you do, and be gone.

@chris @aral Are you a paid spokesperson? Because there isn't a single product that an unstable, unfinished product *should* be shipped.Let us put it simply: If you do but understand why a working screen reader is necessary on release, try using your computer without a monitor and tell us how well that goes.

We wouldn't feel quite so negatively towards flies (et al.) and their place in the ecosystem, if they didn't so insistently try and land on our face. There is an entire, very big world upon which they could land that isn't our relatively infinitesimally small face.

We have two, fairly big, problems with Marxism as an ideology and school of thought. Though, to be clear, we have infinitely more in common with a principled Marxist than with any Liberal. The first problem is that Marx believed that capitalism was a necessary step to the development of communism, and this analysis is only possible if you first ignore all of human existence prior to the fall of Rome and ignore everyone outside of Europe. Finding out that being 30 is going to to drastically count against us when applying for a student visa to study in a Japanese Language School and desperately trying not to despair as we watch what is likely our most accessible ticket out of the rising American Reich vanish into smoke.Seeing 40 was never in our long term plans anyway, so if this doesn't work we'll just kill ourself and save the fash the trouble. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ(Legally joking on that last part).

Hey #programmers of Fedi, what is the best notebook/IDE for #python3 coding on a Windows machine. Please keep in mind, we are not super tech savvy, so the simpler to install/run the better. We want to get back into #coding but honestly it's a bit overwhelming to figure out where to start. Please boost for a wider reach, even if you don't particularly have an answer.πŸ™πŸ»
