@EU_Commission "As our Union is moving towards a more connected future, .eu will be here* to give EU citizens a digital home for their projects."* Conditions and exclusions apply. The Commission's digital overreach makes it harder to recommend the .eu TDL.

@EU_Commission Let's be clear, this includes patent monopoly extension that's not necessarily good for the public."Foster industry innovation" = "proposes a minimum period of regulatory protection of 8 years that can be extended . . . The combination of the existing intellectual property rights and the new regulatory protection periods will also safeguard the EU's competitive edge in pharmaceutical development, one of the most protective world-wide."

@EU_Commission Another way to target demographic decline is to extend healthy lifespans. #Longevity science is making slow but steady progress and the conference for the future of europe did show some popular support for adding public resources toward this research.More automation further reduces the amount of working people required to maintain our quality of life, and UBI or negative income tax would spread the benefits fairly for greatest social stability...

@EU_Commission Having read through chapter 14 (intellectual property stuff) of this new #EU - #Japan trade agreement, looks like it's just a wishlist of whatever corporations want to have, with citizen rights largely ignored. Just more and more IP #monopoly enforcement, never a mention of the value of a vibrant #publicdomain. As expected, really...

@EU_Commission The Defense of Democracy package sounds like another step in the right direction, although since it doesn't tackle foreign funding for anti-EU parties, it may not be effective enough... I look forward to reading legal experts' analysis!

@Ghostie7649Going straight into #LMMS or #FLStudio feels like jumping in the deep end. A decade or two ago I would have recommended taking a few weeks or months inspecting #tracker MODs or #MIDI files, taking them apart to see how the songs were put together, and then imitating and improvising on them until you have something new that you like the sound of; that's what I did.But maybe modern #music #composing tools are so good that even without prior experience it's possible to quickly start producing interesting results?.. I wish I could offer something more useful.

@icedquinn @iska @Reiddragon @lispi314 I hold the view that ZStd is too complicated to count as a real "standard"; the zstd library is an order of magnitude larger than libdeflate, so the algorithm is very difficult to independently re-implement.Therefore I'm very happy to learn about ROLZ! I may want to try re-implementing that.I wonder if retrofitting ROLZ in place of LZ in DEFLATE would produce even better results... and, to speed things up, replace the one or two Huffman stages with FSE, which is after all the primary innovation enabling ZStd.

@nixCraft WebP includes a lossy and lossless algorithm, which are completely different and separate. Why cram both in the same file format? If the use case in practice only requires one or the other type, as most use cases do, half of WebP is unnecessary.Want to re-implement WebP? You have to implement both algorithms. Way harder, than, say, re-implementing simple but effective PNG that just does one thing well.I'd rather upgrade to backward-compatible PNGX. https://mooncore.eu/bunny/txt/pngx-eval.htm

Nice #transrights (and adjacent stuff) demonstration today in #Bristol, about 2-3000 in attendance in all. In addition to trans, enbies, and allies, it was nice to see existing political organisations joining in support, such as the greens, socialist workers, and a trade union or two. When minorities band together, they become too big to step on.https://www.reddit.com/r/bristol/comments/1k31z7d/solidarity_from_bristol/

Another strong #transrights march in #Bristol today, also for #Palestine and against #disability support cuts. Looked like well over 2000+ people again, in all.Protests also ongoing elsewhere in the country. Here's a photo from Bristol, another from Norwich.
