       @john imo explaining it isn't super important for this stage of its growthI think people will understand it pretty quickly and easily if/when its implications become clear in practice, for example if Tumblr makes good on implementing ActivityPub. For now though I think the switch to thinking in 'instances' is probs a big enough shift for most non-techy people to be worried about piling on more concepts

       @john I very much agree it's a strong positive and selling point! However if the point of your thread is to convince people on Twitter that Mastodon is better, I still worry that an analogy explaining the Fediverse in these terms may be more confusing than helpful. It may be better explained by simply linking to that Tumblr ActivityPub story/tweet and mentioning that Tumblr and Mastodon users may be able to follow each other in the future, and saying this is just a hint at its potential

       @john I've been thinking about this too, and how I personally would like some kind of optional 'in case you missed it' algorithm that prioritized posts from people I have a history of liking or responding to, since I've found I miss those often in the pure-chronological timeline
