@brettm I tried really hard to like libreoffice. Writer is OK once you learn that you have to use formatting in a completely different way from Word. Calc I find basically unusable as someone who uses Excel every day at work.

I used to watch a lot of Japanese educational videos about #drawing and #illustration but fell off when I was busy and stressed and not drawing. But I watched a couple this morning and I was like dang, still great advice! If you're interested, 焼まゆる (Yaki Mayuru) has some great videos and they have subtitles in several languages including English (can't vouch for subtitle quality though, didn't check). @futurebird I always read mine, but I had a lot of difficulty with the planning/time management part of college, so I needed any leg up I could get. Also knowing what the workload and grading would be was really helpful...even if I didn't use the information effectively.

@detondev for me it was my "teenager cringe interest" (scare quotes because obviously teenagers are allowed to have interests) so it's hard for me to understand people still being into it now. I think a lot of people have this where something is so associated with your old memories that you don't understand when people have other associations or whatever.Anyway all I remember about it is the unusual format and how every character had like six different video game-esque categories they were in. Fans really liked using them like personality quizzes

I still don't understand federation and defederation. I know a lot of Japanese-language instances are defederated (or unfederated?) from here because when I look up hashtags in Japanese, only like 1 or 2 instances appear. But one post from misskey dot design appeared on my home feed, and I was able to boost it. The person's account shows zero following/followers, which seems unlikely given how many posts they have.If I try to follow this account, is that a problem? If the instance was blocked, would this account be completely invisible to me instead? Are blocking and defederating the same?If somebody could just point me to a good resource? I looked at fedi.tips but it didn't explain what I was looking for.#AskFedi #AskMastodon

@nicholas @theropologist this is good to know, I thought there weren't very many results and that was odd.

@brettm oh wow I remember this illustration. It was posted to twitter maybe 5, 6 years ago. English speakers immediately started using it for memes like this and I wanna say the Japanese artist responded something along the lines of "ummm well I didn't really intend that but have fun I guess haha"

@detondev idk your thoughts on bugs but this leaf shaped one was cool. I also see stick bugs a lot here so they're basically forming a plant together

@futurebird agree. Introverts and people who like alone time get a lot of airtime in these kinds of threads so I'll add my two cents: I've struggled to make more friends as an adult, and my close friends for many years have scattered geographically. I am painfully lonely pretty much all the time. Anything is more fun when I'm doing it with people I like, but without third spaces I can socialize in, I have to rely on "events" and "meetups" which are inconvenient, difficult, and often unhelpful for making lasting connections. I fear the lack of socialization is slowly killing me.I guess I'm not adding much, cause this is a very traditional sense of loneliness. But we are out there too.

@futurebird since I've seen you post about teaching kids (can't remember what age)- when I was a kid in the early 2000s we subscribed to Ask magazine, which had science articles for kids. Loved it and kept the issues a long time, some of them pretty beat up iirc. I looked it up and the series, Cricket, is still around (but they renamed Ask to Spider).

@detondev I appreciate that you boost your posts btw because sometimes I see one and like it but scroll by and then see it again and like it again and decide to interact

@detondev no. And for some reason, I only worry about it when I'm already depressed. If I'm feeling good, I dont need a purpose or a reason other than "I want to do x" or "it'll help me later if I do y"
