#ClimateDiary #ClimateChange #environmentindigenous activist nemonte nenquimo: "You forced your civilisation upon us & now look where we are: global pandemic, climate crisis, species extinction &, driving it all, widespread spiritual poverty.""spiritual poverty" comes up often in indigenous writing on climate change. i think westerners tend to gloss over this.i'd love to know your thoughts on this issue (even if it's "i don't give it much thought") b/c i now agree on its importance.

my view on spiritual poverty & climate change: i basically agree w/indigenous writers.i grew up in a secular/athiest jewish environment, so was always v skeptical of religion & spirituality, but i've now come to see it as central. without healing a broken relationship to nature (which is a spiritual matter), i don't know how climate change gets "solved".i wrote about the evolution of my relationship with nature here: https://newcatwords.tumblr.com/post/696689931564744704/on-divinity-in-nature-hawaii-and-powerful#ClimateChange #ClimateDiary

I think I'm leveling up in #solarpunk: a young gecko is now helping me with mosquito problems by jumping on me to snag any tasty mosquitos that may be circling my skin. This is the kind of cross-species teamwork I'm here for!It jumped on me yesterday, and jumped on me again this morning (it seems to hang out around my desk). If I stay real still and calm, and act like it's not there, hopefully it'll keep coming back, and keep mosquitoes away from me 😘(FYI, this is a gold dust day gecko, very common here on hawai'i island)#nature #gecko #teamwork #mutualism #homestead #offgrid #ecology

I got some old issues of "better homes and gardens" for free at the library, and while I'm enjoying looking at these gardens (I particularly like the trellis design in pic 1), all i can think about is how expensive some of this landscaping looks 😅I want a magazine of solarpunk/dirt farmer/off-gridder/homesteader/diy gardens! Where is it?!? 😸 I guess it's here on masto lol.#solarpunk #diy #gardening #homestead #offgrid

@futurebird everything you said, and also they are willing to "sacrifice" for their side. They also "trust the plan" and are willing to overlook specifics so that the party that's gonna "take away their guns" or "lead to more babies being murdered" or "allow drag queens in schools" is kept out of power. He is their guy and they'd rather have the daddy that beats you sometimes (but says he loves you) rather than the guy who is not trying to be their daddy at all.

i'm not unhappy with shack life, but eventually i would like to have a bit of an upgrade in living arrangements.my problem is a lack of imagination, low standards (i'm honestly fine with my place as it is), cheapness (sure i can imagine amazing things, but what's actually affordable?), and chronic indecision.with tropical construction, the possibilities are nearly limitless. i can't even decide whether i want a single structure or multiple structures with covered areas in the middle...there are a few things i definitely want:* covered outdoor kitchen with dining area* bathroom/shower in separate structure* shed/dry storage (a lot)* large dry space to do art (i like to spread out and work on the floor)* a screened-in bedroom* a covered building/construction/living area that can be on the ground and between structures* probably a single story (2 stories raises cost and complexity)but what shape, size, and arrangement should those things come in? no clue.this isn't in my immediate or even medium-term future, but given how hard it is for me to visualize what i want (i blame CPTSD, which doesn't allow my mind to even start having good dreams and desires for myself, and lets me be happy with whatever little i have because "at least it's not [living in an apartment, being with my parents, etc.]"), i've started looking at house design books, etc.the hilo library actually has quite a few house design books, but of course most of them are really fancy. there are some tiny house/shed books, but most of them feature houses in cold areas that have design constraints i don't have. there are a few "tropical house" books, but they all feature houses that are extremely extravagant.there are loads of creative shackteaus in my area, and i enjoy visiting people's places and seeing what they've done.also, there are a lot of places on youtube, and you can even find tropical construction - especially if you expand your search beyond english-language sources, to spanish, portuguese, and southeast asia (which probably has the most similar climate to east hawai'i).mud/earthen construction isn't appropriate here (we have no construction-grade mud, and anyway, we don't need such heavy-duty construction). bamboo is doable, but i'd need to find builders who feel comfortable working with bamboo, and who aren't too expensive (the only bamboo construction company i know in the area is kind of luxury "eco" construction). plus, i'd need a source of treated building bamboo that wasn't too expensive.anyway, just sharing my thoughts as i start trying to imagine the possibilities within my extremely limited budget and extremely poor/overwhelmed imagination.to that end, here's the kind of outdoor kitchen that i like to see:#offgrid #homestead #hawaii #solarpunk

A small salt drying operation in kaimu, on the cliffs by the ocean. I'm impressed with how much they've harvested, because I've only ever seen tiny pockets of salt in depressions in the shoreline lava. I wish I knew the secret salt spot, or how they got so much. (I don't know who set up the drying racks. I don't think it was the people in the pic, they were just visiting the shore like I was.)For those of us who like to think about where our food will come from when the boats stop coming, salt is easily-overlooked. But if you live in an area with shoreline, it may be possible to harvest it. I definitely wish I knew where the good spots were, just so I know that I *could* get it, should the need arise. It's definitely not a high priority issue (like setting up solar or getting gardens online), but it is a vital element necessary for human health and I'm glad there are people in my area who know how to do it and are actively doing it now.(And of course, my mom, who was visiting, said "why would you harvest salt? It's so cheap at the store.", which is a fair point, and that's why you don't see me out there doing the harvesting. There was a lot more tourism to do that day, so I didn't feel like explaining about the boats and how the more stuff you know how to do for yourself ahead of time, the better position you'll be in if/when it's needed.)#salt #hawaii #GrowYourOwn #food #solarpunk

@LifeTimeCooking I didn't know they were sticky. I harvested some from a roadside tree in San Diego once and just crushed it up fresh and they were fine.

@futurebird a lot of the people who are farther down in the aliens world do see their phenomenon as associated with angels and ghosts. Rey hernandez, who wrote a book about the "contact modalities", aretalks about an event where he was with his wife out at night. He saw a typical UFO, and she saw what she described as a "celestial/angelic craft". Same object (altho who knows if it appeared the same to both of them, or if they saw the same thing and interpreted it differently, or what).Anyway, I think things out there are pretty weird.By any chance, have you seen the new documentary "age of disclosure"?

It's vanilla bean harvest day! After growing vanilla vines in various places for various years and finally getting some flowers in a place I could reach (as opposed to high up in a tree), then hand-pollinating them with the right technique, then waiting for the pods to reach full size over a couple months, then letting the pods ripen on the vine for 9 months, they're finally ready to harvest!I'll be using this thread to track the rest of the process. So, how did I know when to harvest? According to this blog post: https://vanillery.com/ripe-green-vanilla-pods/ they are ready to harvest when the bottoms are yellow and just starting to crack. I've included pics below showing my pods this morning when I decided to harvest.Pic 1: yellow on the bottom Pic 2: yellow on bottom and just starting to splitPic 3: further splitting, with seeds visible inside. I smelled this one at the place where it was opening, and it smelled fantastic - like vanilla.Next steps described in next posts...1/#vanilla #orchids #plants #hawaii #food

The first step in vanilla pod processing is to "kill" the bean via boiling or freezing.I don't have a freezer, so I decided to submerge in boiled water for 3-5 mins.Instructions here: https://www.vanillapura.com/blogs/vanilla-extract-making-101/how-to-cure-vanilla-beans-at-home-a-step-by-step-guideAnd here: https://www.kingson-foodtech.com/en/a4-11232-16797/The-Journey-of-Vanilla-Beans-Vanilla-Bean-Processing.htmlPic 1: beans in boiled water (not on the flame - just in water that I boiled).Pic 2: after boiling, I laid them out and dried them with a towel.2/#vanilla #plants #food #hawaii #orchids

After patting the vanilla pods dry, I wrapped them in towels and packed them in an insulated cooler bag with a hot water bottle, wrapped in more towel. This is the beginning of the "sweating" stage that lasts 10-14 days. The will spend evenings wrapped up with a hot water bottle in an insulated cooler bag, and they will spend daytime drying in the sun.See process description here: https://www.kingson-foodtech.com/en/a4-11232-16797/The-Journey-of-Vanilla-Beans-Vanilla-Bean-Processing.htmlAnd here: https://www.vanillapura.com/blogs/vanilla-extract-making-101/how-to-cure-vanilla-beans-at-home-a-step-by-step-guidePic 1: I wrapped the pods in their little towels, then packed them in an insulated cooler bag that was lined with a big folded towel.Pic 2: I put a hot water bottle on top, wrapped it all up in the big towel, and zipped up the cooler bag. They will stay like this till tomorrow (I'll keep an eye on the water bottle and refill with hot water as necessary), then will set to sun dry during the daytime tomorrow.3/#vanilla #orchids #plants #food #hawaii
