Rediscovered a road map of northern England from 1986, when the M1 ended in the centre of Leeds and the A1 went to the Tyne Tunnel. Is there any possible use for this map now or should it just go in the recycling? Creative ideas sought!

@gunner I've been using Java since the 90s (as well as other languages). I think it's a good choice of language to learn first. It's one of the least "idiomatic" programming languages: where many languages have different "styles" meaning the same algorithm can be expressed different ways, in Java there's generally just one sensible way to do things. Some programmers find this boring, but it does mean you can look at pretty much any Java code and very readily understand it.

I bet an awful lot of the people taking an oath of allegiance to the king today don't have a clue what "allegiance" actually means. You might guess that it has something to do with "ally" but it doesn't - that has a different latin root (ligare, to bind). Allegiance is a promise to treat the king as a liege (from laeticus), a superior who must be obeyed. An oath of allegiance is to give you an obligation to do whatever the king wants, no matter how stupid, because he is your superior.
