#foss people out there, what #linux distro do you use and why? Please note, this is not a distro bashing conversation. Rather, it's curiosity about other opinions and learning.I've used #ubuntu #kubuntu or #kdeneon as daily driver for the past 14 years. Whilst I like neon, it doesn't play very nicely with Nvidia. Yes, I'm fully aware you can get it to work, but it's a pain in the ass and regularly breaks shortly after getting things somewhat working. At least that's my experience. About ten years ago, I had a brief flirtation with #opensuse and the relationship ended badly. I still have a little trauma from that. I'm pretty sure it was all my fault, but never could figure out what I did wrong. I've been very unimpressed with the direction that Canonical is taking and wanted to try something new. I tried an Arch based distro last autumn and really found the community too caustic to new people joining. Not to mention, I saw a lot fascist views inserted into comments and replies to other users. That was dropped quickly. After New Year's, I decided to get crazy and installed #fedora. 😅 I know, I know, not really a big leap into the unknown, but I've never tried it before. I've been using it for almost 6 months now and it's ok. I don't like it and I don't dislike it. My biggest issue is that Xorg seems broken (and I cannot figure out why) and I can only use Wayland to login. Wayland is just not quite there for my workflow. Oh, I should also mention. I'm one of those #kdeplasma nut cases.

@aj neither actor is a good actor and it's likely to result in more civilian deaths when it's said and done. If it results in the two parties destroying each other and preventing global nuclear catastrophy (either via overt action of nuclear war or destruction of the nuclear power plant), is that so bad? It's hard to say. If civilian death is avoided and it's only two fascist armies fighting to the death, what's so bad about that?

@aj although, I'd argue more for self-governance over another centralised government. But as long as capitalism prevails, that will be highly unlikely, as you note.

@Pythia what about installing either #lineageos or #grapheneos without Google? If you can't do so on your existing phone, it's relatively easy to find an unlocked, used phone. Both of them come with web browsers (although you can install others if desired - default Graphene browser is better than LOS), you can install Tusky on both and you can install #antennapod on both. Either from F-Droid or Tusky direct from GitHub.Main positive of Graphene is it's more secure. Main downside is they drop OS support when Google does and mainly focus on pixel phones (which are not cheap). Main positive of LOS is support for lots and lots of phones and they maintain support for a long time. Main downside is it's let's secure. If you don't use any apps that require Google play services (most notably, banking apps but many others too) you won't have any problems. I've never installed Graphene myself, but have been recently encouraged to do so by many people. But, I have done LOS many times and it's relatively straightforward if you closely follow instructions.

@aj I forgot that you were an Arch guy...... Was reminded seeing the emoji in your bio thingy. I just recently switched to EndeavourOS! But with Plasma. 🤫Anyhow, that's not the point. I was rather curious how your adventure with #calkey has been going thus far?

I hate searching online any longer. I miss the days gone by when you would input a search string and you'd get back results related to what you'd input. Even better were days when you could use search modifiers to be more specific. No, not any longer. Now a search gives you results of what it thinks you want! And this is just some fucking algorithm, this isn't AI bullshit! On top of that, the first 13 pages of links are either shopping you don't want to do (or can't afford) or dodgy websites that want to steal your life. Capitalism at its finest. "you don't really know what you need or want so let us tell you what that is, so you can buy useless shit that we didn't need to manufacture but is still helping us burn this planet to ash. That's what we know you really want. Can we get you a new car, nuclear war, and a migraine with that?"

@mahaska so, I've been giving DDG another try since we chatted. It's a lot better than it used to be or at least than my memory of it. To the point that I've now installed it on my phone. And I added it as a search option in FF on my computer.I've compared a few searches between DDG and startpage and some of them are pretty similar, whilst other ones are drastically different. I don't know if that's SEO or some other ranking going on in the background or what. Not sure which I'll stick with right now.

@8petros Yes, the internet absolutely conveys metaphors poorly, but frankly, so do most humans regardless whether they're online or not. Some of us (speaking personally here) have diagnosable mental health conditions (defined by some as a disability) where we are unable to comprehend them, regardless of how hard we try or how much education we pursue. Whilst I appreciate metaphors make difficult topics easier to swallow for some people (and in some collectivist cultures are used to teach lessons or even publicly shame people), for others of us it only increases misunderstanding, confusion, and frustration. @aral
