@untsuki @devinprater In a way this goes back to the "cathedral" vs "bazaar" development models. The kinds of changes needed for things like accessibility tend to be spread across lots of projects and so it takes a long coordinated effort to get everyone necessary onboard. One approach would be to build a bigger coalition, for example screen reader needs align closely with infrastructure for building voice assistants. Open transcription tech has been advancing so maybe catalyst for new effort.

@prma Sigh, I hadn't run into that because I don't have any current projects that use Rust but I do not love the way the team addressed it (here for those following: https://github.com/chimera-linux/cports/issues/203)

@prma I don't understand the Chimera maintainers' hostility. Chimera differs from other distros enough that Rust would need a new target definition to get support which is a technical reality but could be suggested kindly.

@foone Don't worry, to unstick the adhesive all you have to do is add heat.

@q66 @lanodan I remember working on 8 bit micros, you can get a lot done with 40 columns and upper case only AS LONG AS YOU ARE OK SHOUTING IN ENGLISH ALL OF THE TIME. Wait...

@foone Would it violate the spirit of the idea to make the video chip able to read out along a diagonal line across the sprite? More or less Bresenham lines. The logic for tracking which sprite to draw gets more complicated, but maybe no significant incremental cost above what's necessary to support transparency.

@neauoire Feels like a cryptography thing. I bet it makes pretty pictures if you give it a frame buffer.

@foone I never knew about the 32MB thing. Coding techniques were already pretty sophisticated by that point so I doubt there's a lot of neglected efficiency but that sounds like a fun project.

@foone I spent formative years striving for pixel-perfect speed clicking (first person shooter games), of course I mouse a little oddly.

@neauoire Graffiti is a gem of an engineering solution that recognizes some hard truths in HCI about predictability that to this day a lot of people fail to recognize (see also jamming modal and voice interfaces into every appliance).

@neauoire The letter at a time model is a little bit tedious for extended writing but adding a few word suggestions similar to phone keyboards would pretty much close the gap. I don't enjoy typing on touch screen tablets, graffiti evolved with word suggestions might end up being similarly fast and a lot more pleasant.

@neauoire Yeah in a way letter at a time is a feature, the user can always tell what's going on. With continuous writing you end up with the same challenge as voice dictation where the user has to keep track of both what they're saying but also the last handful of seconds because the machine may go back and revise everything. Too squirrely.

@neauoire I maintain that Markdown is a downstream product of software distribution and reuse being difficult. It makes sense in a world where the user of the data will not have ready use of the tools used to author it, or full fidelity viewers. It's sort of the XLS of the software world.
