@WilhelmIII @Leadmaus @judgedread An even older solution is that a man may not be called to war until his first son has been born.

@JoshuaSlocum @PodunkPotato @ACL9000 @judgedread The only thing you need to know about JD Vance is that Ben Shapiro on on Twitter endorsing the pick.

@Myles @Shadowman311 @LordMordred @TrevorGoodchild @randbot When I was persuaded of the flaws of libertarian individualism it meant I had to pick a team, and picking a team means you have to support the team's choice even if it sucks.Turns out that sportsball fans actually had the correct (if improperly aimed) instincts all along: my team, right or wrong.

@judgedread @admin Tucker Carlson is endorsing Vance, for whatever that's worth.

@IAMAL_PHARIUS Probably not. It's basically mandatory for anyone wishing to hold public office at a certain level.

@judgedread The snipers didn't need to be in on it, only their supervisor. There was a tree blocking the view of that roof for the two snipers we've seen in those videos.

@philmchawk @petra @dictatordave @JoshuaSlocum @judgedread Do you know how many calories a typical adult must eat to survive for one year? What vegetables do you plan to eat? How many can be grown per square foot over the course of a year? What yields do you get with you don't have access to fertilizer, chemical, organic, or otherwise which can not be produced on site?

@philmchawk @JoshuaSlocum @dictatordave @judgedread Do a 30 day "eat absolutely nothing except what I harvest from my garden" challenge, post pictures of your harvests and your before and after weight and more people would take your claims of how much land is required for subsistence farming seriously.Without knowing anything about your physical condition my rough estimate is that you would lose at about 10% of your body weight within that month.Depending on how good of shape you're in currently that might be good thing, however it's very bad from a "prove I can survive for a few years doing this" perspective.

@philmchawk @JoshuaSlocum @dictatordave @judgedread > Not really, the point isn't that I would live the exact same life style without any changes, the point is that you would not die and can LIVE key word LIVE not live the same during those years.I wouldn't argue with you if you changed "years" to "weeks". Perhaps "months" if your BMI is over 25.

@philmchawk @JoshuaSlocum @dictatordave @judgedread You don't need 3000 calories a day to sit around, but you're not just sitting around if you're subsistence gardening.

@philmchawk @JoshuaSlocum @dictatordave @judgedread In your estimation how big should a garden be to produce half a million calories worth of harvest over the course of a year?

@philmchawk @JoshuaSlocum @dictatordave @judgedread > You could do it much smaller but then you are tripling or quadrupling the work. You're also increasing the external inputs: fertilizer, electricity for irrigation, etc.If you have to survive on what you are growing then that automatically means you don't have supply chains supplying those things. At those densities all the planting and harvesting work is done manually since feeding an ox or horse to use as a labor saving device would require even more land.

@philmchawk @JoshuaSlocum @dictatordave @judgedread I'm not saying saying that you need electricity and store bought fertilizer to grow food.I'm saying you need those things to get the maximum possible yield per acre.Of course people farmed in the 1800s and before, but the acreage required to support a single person higher. If you take away all the advantages of modern supply chains then you have to go back to the old yields.

@philmchawk @JoshuaSlocum @dictatordave @judgedread ourworldindata.org/crop-yields#arable-land-use-per-personOver the last hundred years, technology has increased crop yields per acre by about a factor of four.Suddenly take away the supply chains supplying that technology and that half acre hobby garden now needs to be two acres to produce the exact same amount of food, if you're ready for the change and if everything goes right during the transition. The garden that you thought would support you now only meets 25% of your calorie requirements.

@JoshuaSlocum @EvilSandmich @philmchawk @judgedread There's a reason the Homestead Act handed out land in 160 acre increments: that's about how much it takes feed a family and have a bit of profit left over using the technology that was available at the time.

@petra @JoshuaSlocum @Ghislaine I am very glad that I almost never have to deal with floating point operations in software, and on the rare occasions when it I do it's only for display purposes and never for critical business logic.Dealing with integers and their tricky issues is plenty of complication in my life.

@petra @JoshuaSlocum @Ghislaine If you're implementing in C or C++ then signed integers overflow... probably. Usually. Depending on the OS, compiler, and optimization level.Unsigned integers always overflow with well defined behavior, meaning your math is predictably modular (so you better know to expect that). Many languages outside of C and C++ don't have unsigned integers though.

@petra @JoshuaSlocum @Ghislaine > This can all be handled well and predictably by engineers who understand what they are doingIt can be handled well, but it still trips up a lot of people.Explicitly testing for signed integer overflow in a way that prevents the compiler from ever optimizing away your test is definitely in the top 10 of most difficult C/C++ programming challenges.
