I was very glad to see that Carney didn't get ambushed at the Trump presser although he was surrounded by a pretty strong Canadian delegation. Is it just me or was Trump kind of fan boying Carney? Weird....#ElbowsUp

I'm blogging again. It's kind of like screaming into the void except in long form. Here's the first one for anybody that's interested: https://the-canadian.ghost.io/the-fraser-files/

Under the law you basically can't exist without money. In cities you can't loiter or sleep in parks. In the bush you can't permanently camp on crown land. So if society won't allow you to exist without money and it believes you have the right to exist, society should give you a basic amount of money to exist.

The fediverse is the last safe information harbour on the Internet.Twitter, Facebook, Tick/Tock, etc all promote enragement for engagement which is the bedrock of today's authoritarianism. If you're on BlueSky you've already seen how the new boss is same as the old boss when it comes to centralized control and censorship. There's also questions around where the moneys coming from. They may already be soft captured. Today more than ever the world needs decentralized social media.

As a footnote to my last post I don't consider BlueSky part of the fediverse because, well they don't actually federate with anyone..The moniker of decentralized is also fairly weak as it takes heroic effort to actually break free of the mothership. Some have but they're outliers at best.I will get pushback on this, but search your feelings, you know it to be true.

So I'm still somewhat confused. I thought that federalizing the national guard required some sort high standard that needed to be met. Maybe someone can educate me here..

@Nonilex At some point somebodies going to call a sympathetic police dept in a blue city and you're going to see a stand off between federals and local cops. All it takes is a hair trigger and you'll be embarking on an armed constitutional crisis.

Pro tip: If you live outside of North America and you suspect someone is faking a Canadian identity (backpack flag, etc), ask them if they'd like a bottle of pop. If they react with confusion or say "Did you mean soda" they're Americans.

@rapscalorie @me @mekkaokereke I just feel they're too easily weaponized. The ever present question of who decides what's on the block list and the criteria for being added gets complicated quickly with no good answers. I'll keep my own council on whom I block and I won't impose that on anyone else.

@futurebird This is a very loose equivalent but reminded me non the less. We used to teach kids to play hockey on a full sheet of ice. We then realized for small people to skate those distances was insane. Especially for tiny goalies to cover a full sized net was crazy. Now we play half rink games with special nets. This video hilariously demonstrates the point. https://youtu.be/cXhxNq59pWg?si=CJd6VxRQE5QmjLDJ

Seems like new people are arriving via #forkiverse. My biggest Mastodon tip is follow everyone. Not just ha ha ha ya follow everyone, no I mean follow everyone you can. With no algorithm you need content for your feeds. You can always cutaway the accounts you don't like after the fact. You have way more safety tools here than on any other platform so follow en masse.

Second tip for newcomers. Don't use the official mobile apps, they're garbage. Use a third party mobile app. I use @pachli as an Android user. Ask around for IOS there are several good ones.

Again for the benifit of the new people here's the thing with the fediverse, you're going to have to put in a little more work to curate your experience. However the payoff is that you're going to get much better, more authentic engagement from real people. I've had a presence on all the platforms and this where I hang out exclusively. Bottom line it is what you make it. #forkiverse

@Gargron I've had the exact opposite experience. I evaluated Firefox for several weeks and had to abondoned it due to slow performance. Goes to show how much individual setups can impact the experience. I'm running Vivaldi on a Dell workstation running Ubuntu. I have 64gb of ram and an older Xeon processor.

Looks like the UK does not have our back:"Keir Starmer rejected his Canadian counterpart’s call for mid-sized countries to band together in the face of unpredictable global powers — and insisted his “common sense” British approach will do just fine."Like I said, we'll find out who our friends are.https://www.politico.eu/article/keir-starmer-mark-carney-no-new-world-order-united-kingdom-canada/
