@niels @filippo For utility protocols in 3NWeb group of protocols ( https://opensource.ieee.org/3nweb/architecture/-/blob/main/etc/3NWeb-overview.pdf ), in DNS we use TXT record in a form "<service>=<url>".e.g.$ dig TXT 3nweb.com...;; ANSWER SECTION:3nweb.com.21600INTXT"asmail=3nweb.net/asmail"3nweb.com.21600INTXT"3nstorage=3nweb.net/3nstorage"3nweb.com.21600INTXT"mailerid=mailerid.org"Experience has been good. A person can just own domain without running any servers. And for an enthusiast, who may have different ports or routes (paths) dedicated to particular services TXT format also looks simpler. What about making a user-oriented simple approach for other services?A person writes simple "<service>=<url>", and provider at that url can do "priority" "weight" on their side.Or, can it be even easier? Cause easier for user_in_control is the goal.

@niels @filippo Let's sketch a path for Mastodon to implement user-controlled domain-anchored id.Case of existing user, who wants to rename to own id (migrated case).Example: - @user@discuss.systems wants to have @user@user.domain - user.domain should have simple DNS record pointing to current provider of mastodon service - @discuss.system may keep a courtesy record to direct queries @user@discuss.systems to @user@user.domainCase of user with just own id. - All queries start with looking at DNS.Case of users on domain of instance. - It works as now. Now, servers should learn to handle users with different domains in id. May be in protocol it will need cached_from_dns value of provider going together with user's id.

@wjmaggos @ricmac @tomgauld.bsky.social @snarfed.org Concepts "ours" and "theirs" are on this diagram/map.Where is "mine", as in "my network", "my human connections", irrespective of how it is mediated/implemented.We are not done in the architecture/design space, yet.

@wjmaggos Classical federation: I (client app) ask home (assumes blind trust?) server to do particular steps on my behalf - go on the internet to a list of places, and get data from there.Who makes and curates the list?Ultimately, I have my list, and go directly to resources on the net. This is called a list of RSS feeds, and app checking them. Then may be use that not only for blogs. There should be many places that advertise lists. But no single authority: these tell to read bible, those point to koran, and this is pointer to author Dirac, and so on.

@wjmaggos Very good. Also pass this to Canadians. Similar ills that should be fixed, sans drama.

@wjmaggos Let's expand the context of this joke.- Dems, Clinton, really pressured Ukraine to give nukes to Russia in early 1990's.- In return there is a promise document concerning safety.- When invasion is emminent, Dems didn't give proper weapons. Value of that promise?TLDR; I wish you were Ukrainian in the East with the hope that Dems would honor promises. You would then have a bit different perspective. You'd be asking, why you have rocket that can push away Russian airplanes from cities that are "conventionally nuked", but Dems are not allowing you to use it.Escallation? On the ground people don't know how further it can escalate.

@aral It is corporatism, not capitalism. This interview drilled it for me in more details https://youtu.be/QJtPROVsePk?feature=sharedBefore I used to say, do you and everyone around eat at homeless kotchen? No, there is local bakery and coffee shop. And normal scale actually is healthy. Ask folks from USSR.

@wjmaggos noting words in a chat:"banned from bluesky" - very strong side meanings.Blue sky, doesn't judge. Blue sky doesn't reward. Blue sky just is.

@wjmaggos tradeoff is simple: when you have custody ovef your stuff, then you own it.

@wjmaggos let's go one by one here. Complexity for end user. There should be none for human. Not more then what I have for typing you message.Code of your browser is orders of magnitudes more complex than what is needed here. Does user notice browser complexity - no. Is using browser easy - yes. So, this is my take that it is possible to have machines doing bidding for you without you being a wizard.

@wjmaggos Today I don't want to do this, cause you need a server setup. Investment was never placed to move business logic and custody over data from server to client.

@wjmaggos p2p purists may point to some no-server solutions. But that breaks when you ask about efficiency. We want servers to ensure fast finding and passing bytes around. Logic on a client will do bidding fot user. And since devices are in user's custody, client can be 3rd party implementation doing whatever that user wants. These need a long living state data on client. Making it impossible to be implemented as "just a web page", cause browsers limit allowance in storage, and mop it up often.

@wjmaggos Costs.May be people should chipin. Like bandwidth. You publish it: you are responsible for that place/server. Someone reads it: they pay fod their connection.Responsility/cost is complexity of sys-admining. Let's talk about these two orthogonal things when we have syoercomputers in our pockets.

@wjmaggos "AP can win" - has just kinda failed in that outage, because some server took you client's logic of shaping what is allowed for you to read.Just think about. Your supercomputer can figure how to pull data from those places you follow. Then why outage happened?
