@neil Funny how every site that claims to value my privacy uses privacy-invasive tracking that requires them to show me that nag strip as per the GDPR…

@stefano if a system is impractical to use for a purpose then of course it will be judged on those grounds too. As it is, FreeBSD is enough of a mess as a client OS that it’s simply not practical for everyday use on the sort of computers most people use, compared to its competitors with more resources behind them. That creates a downward spiral where fewer people start using the system because of its high threshold to becoming useful for them. BSDs don’t live in a vacuum. Alternatives exist.

@stefano I agree with your point, but a big problem for the BSDs is that people tend to use what they’re used to. A big part of gaining new blood is attracting people to try a system on their own computer. If only the nerdiest of nerds manage to attain a functioning system, that will severely limit the amount of people who choose to use it in production, and who vote to keep existing installations in production once it’s up to them to decide.

@tschaefer I wish we could see something similar here in Sweden. Unfortunately the way the oligopol works here there’s no incentive for ISPs outside the largest cities (nor for mobile network operators) to provide full internet access to end-users. More and more people get stuck behind CG-NAT instead.

@tschaefer IPv6 availability for regular consumers. With that in place the services *will* follow. IT Ops departments don’t want to put in the work for something that “almost no-one” uses. Make all clients use it and that argument falls flat, along with “nobody would notice the difference”.

@jhx I made the same decision several years ago: I don’t need five nines of uptime, but ZFS makes it dead simple to snapshot file systems and send them off-site for increased recoverability.

@mjg59 while this may well be true, and if so is outrageous in itself, iirc the original post made no mention of the CEO’s sex yet still had me think that the money could’ve been better spent, so I guess *that’s* what I reacted to. If the original poster has a track record of spreading a misogynistic agenda I may still think twice about boosting future posts from them, but this in itself doesn’t necessarily invalidate the point of individual posts.
