I think I got my first fediverse account in 2009 (on identi.ca). I was quite involved in sv wikipedia at the time, and when @brion started to work for StatusNet I first found out about federated social media (thanks for that Brion).Since then I have had quite a few accounts on different federated platforms, and I have tried hosting my own diaspora pod as well as being on other folks mastodon servers, some now defunct and others risen back to life again like @koyu

I was quite mad and disappointed at the poor service I got from the only broadband provider I could get in my apartement (Comhem/Tele2). So I opted to get a 5G modem with an external antenna instead of their coaxial offering. And it turned out quite well. And only costs me 80 SEK/month (~8€).

I have been thinking about machine learning and large language models recently in the context of work. And I feel a bit bummed about how large corporations have convinced people that they invented "AI" in recent years and that lots of people believe them and react as if that was true. The fact is that ML has been the domain of academia since the sixties and a lot of cool things have come from that. ChatGPT and other toys are nothing next to what the tools can be (and is) used for in science.

It is true that Google contributed to science with Deep Mind and Alpha fold, which was cool of them. I'll give them that. I whish that more of the effort in the space went in that direction rather than trying to sell people crappy toys and pretending like the toys can replace human workers.

@selea yes, and there is also a lot of cool tech that is free and open source, that you can selfhost using commodity hardware that will be useful running ethically sourced models like https://localai.io and https://tabby.tabbyml.com basically I think I am bummed about people misstaking marketing from large corporations for the stuff they are exploiting for profit.

Is rewriting 'sudo' in rust really a good idea? 🤔The current incarnation of the sudo project was started in 1986, and as such has had almost forty years to iron out bugs.
