@stux GenX, but totally agree with this. When I turned on the first computer I owned it would just present a blinking cursor at a BASIC prompt. To get it to do anything interesting or useful took a bit of work. Driven by curiosity I learned a ton. But the biggest shift was when the Internet went mainstream and became a thing carried in our pockets wherever we go. The childhood experience of IT now involves being tracked and prodded by multi-billion dollar companies, 24/7.

@futurebird solid idea! We had a Samsung dishwasher that sung a tune for like 30s whenever it finished, and the family would always stop whatever we were doing and dance whenever the dishes finished. The world needs more joy-bringing appliances. 😁

@aral It’s easy to shout at these people for failing your purity test, but when you take a look at who’s involved, what they have contributed to making ActivityPub a thing where you can shout at people for failing your purity test….Not to diminish the value that your shouting at people on the Fediverse brings to the Fediverse. It really wouldn’t be the place it is today without people like you here to loudly denounce strangers for doing things you disagree with.

@futurebird my wife suffered a fracture of both ankles a while back and we got one of these - but waterproof and designed to help people get in and out of the bath and it was a lifesaver.

@futurebird @pluralistic sells his through https://libro.fm. They don’t have the selection of Audible, but the artists and authors get a fair(er) share of the books you buy. And they sell some without DRM encumbrances.

There’s this weird behavior from Democratic thinkers trying to figure out how they lost the last election and unclear about how to win the next one. These people see Bernie and AOC filling halls, and Mamdani handing Cumo his ass and say things like “populism isn’t the way forward for Democrats,” or “socialism won’t win in a general election” and it is clearer every day that the Democratic Party will need to be dragged into the future by the will of the people, or left behind.

@futurebird am still working my best job (in IT) after 20 years and I was contacted by a recruiter to apply for it. I gather the job market has changed somewhat in the intervening years. 🙃
