@ChrisWere right? All of my Unix systems are fine. Even the servers sitting on the edge getting poked every minute by automated scanners.

@arichtman I think VMWare ESX (or whatever they call it nowadays) or Proxmox are probably all 80% of the people using k8s need.Maybe they need a wrapper (like Hashicorp Packer) to generate the containers in a automated fashion too.I think the only "big change" in tech from ~90's-00s to where we are now is software is even more bloated, so maybe it needs "more resources". All the other problems are exactly the same though.

@arichtman @pete_wright I think the value is mostly for the business. It lowers the bar for who you can hire as a sysadmin. All you need to know is how to write a helm chart and run a few commands. Understanding how anything actually works is optional.

I am reminded that "localhost" is magical. Most believe it resolves to 127.0.0.1, and it usually does. But it's not impossible to add "localhost" to DNS and have it resolve to a different address.Additionally. "localhost" doesn't even have to resolve to 127.0.0.1. We get a whole /8! Do you want to run two local webservers and have them both use port 80? You could have them listen on different addresses! 127.0.0.2 and 127.0.0.3! Have fun 😁

(Technically we get a /8 for 127.0.0.0, but network stacks can limit it to just 127.0.0.1/32 for loopback according to the RFC)"127.0.0.0/8 - This block is assigned for use as the Internet host loopback address. A datagram sent by a higher-level protocol to an address anywhere within this block loops back inside the host. This is ordinarily implemented using only 127.0.0.1/32 for loopback."https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc5735(I've used the technique on Linux and MacOS)

AFAIK there is no limitation to assigning "localhost" to DNS though. If you want to cause chaos and see a bunch of traffic not destined to you, register "localhost" to a regular address in your DNS search path on your network.

If you host a website with a paywall for articles. Do you have a plan in place to release articles for free after a certain amount of time? How do you deal with archive.org? Do you allow it, or block it?What have you done to ensure access to your articles in the future?

@futurebird Natural Disasters are highly profitable for them. People rush to stockpile goods before disaster. People have to rebuild homes after disaster. Lots with homes become vacant and cheap after disaster. And that's without even thinking about medical costs and such. I think its all profit motives. When I lived in Ft. Lauderdale and Houston every Hurricane season it was the same 'rush' of spending before and after the hurricane.

We put a Harris/Walz sign out at the end of our driveway, unfortunately we chose to put it a few feet from where we usually put the trashcan. Of course the people who work for the trash pickup company decided they should block our sign with the trashcan instead of putting it into the usual spot. Classy.

@jlargentaye @b0rk I think understanding that 'every new invocation of bash is a new set of possible variables' is one of the hard parts too.The 'invocation' section of the bash man page is filled with deep lore, magic, and knowledge. This is why cron jobs possibly have a different path.variable quoting _always_ gets me, even though its mostly automatic at this point. Good to code bash with shellcheck nearby.
