@simon I'd also be interested in the impact on language learning, and the related loss of different ways of thinking that learning languages gives you. It must all have a chilling effect on people who've chosen not to learn creative skills that seem AI-replaceable

Who think human nature meets computerised decision-making is going to end well? UK officials use AI '...the processes they use are fair because the final decisions are made by people. Many experts worry, however, that biased algorithms will lead to biased final decisions, because officials can only review the cases flagged to them and often have limited time to do so.'https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/oct/23/uk-officials-use-ai-to-decide-on-issues-from-benefits-to-marriage-licences

@simon thanks for sharing that! GPTs is a terrible name, do you think they'll come up with something more distinctive?

@simon I think he's right. The gulf between those using GPT4 and everyone else was really noticeable at the Fantastic Futures conference.

@billseitz @simon I like 'containers'. And ideally there'd be one, well documented for newbies, super-reliable way to do them, swap between and return to them

Cool tool! MastodonContentMover'a command-line tool that downloads your posts from one Mastodon instance, saving them as a set of files on your computer, and then re-posts them on any other Mastodon instance.[so that] Mastodon users [can] move content they value when migrating from one instance to another, which is not currently possible within Mastodon itself.'https://mastodoncontentmover.github.io/

@simon you could also look at national or other web archives in addition to the Internet Archive. You can save warc files and post them somewhere if everything else fails. Folk on the #DigiPres hashtag will have more informed ideas

@Wolven 'In its submission, OpenAI said it believed that “legally, copyright law does not forbid training”' is disingenuous at best

@simon I have no idea if my compromise works, but I'll accept an invitation to talk about 'AI in libraries' then say '(for now) AI is just fancy autocorrect / statistics made sexy / machine learning' in the first minute of my talk. I gave up being more precise because nobody knew they actually wanted to learn about ML until they knew what it was, while everyone thinks they should know something about AI.

Online anonymity: study found ‘stable pseudonyms’ created a more civil environment than real user names 'What matters, it seems, is not so much whether you are commenting anonymously, but whether you are invested in your persona and accountable for its behaviour in that particular forum. There seems to be value in enabling people to speak on forums without their comments being connected, via their real names, to other contexts. ...calls to end anonymity online by forcing people to reveal their real identities might not have the effects people expect'https://theconversation.com/online-anonymity-study-found-stable-pseudonyms-created-a-more-civil-environment-than-real-user-names-171374

UK peeps, do you live near a river? 'When the UK was in the EU, it was subject to the water framework directive, which meant it had to carry out detailed pollution analysis of waterways and report every year. ... ’Citizen scientists’ have therefore been intensifying efforts to check rivers for pollution to try to find the true scale of the problem. The Rivers Trust has developed an app for its Big River Watch and is asking users to spend 15 minutes by their local river [between 6-12 September] and fill in a survey'https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/sep/07/citizen-scientists-to-check-uk-rivers-for-sewage-and-pollution

'Never again means never again for everyone'Powerful words from Nan Goldin, speaking in Germany. She also points out that 'Anti-Zionism has nothing to do with antisemitism', and the harms of that false equivalence.Full video via https://www.dazeddigital.com/art-photography/article/65325/1/nan-goldin-makes-powerful-speech-condemning-genocide-in-gaza-palestine-israel

If you've never previously interacted with me, you'd better have a great answer for why a post quoting a Jewish woman saying 'never again means never again for everyone' suddenly makes you put yourself in my mentions

Slightly envious of Australia right now: 'It has been so long since we have not had culture wars or grievances dominating our politics — or its undertones — it is hard to imagine what it might look like.It opens up the scope for rational discussion about policy at a time when we need it.'https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05-04/election-result-labor-victory-positive-future/105247606 #AusPol

A cafe in Dublin airport has a robot that delivers hot food orders! But it just sped off without letting the people get their food out. When it came back it had a human minder. And when my order arrived, the same human bought it, saying she couldn't trust the robot. This is a post about most AI.
