Anthropomorphizing the technology is just one more way humans try to escape accountability. “The AI contributed a patch”, “the AI wrote the blog post”, “the car hit the pedestrian” and “the knife killed the victim”, those are all the same framing.https://swecyb.com/@anderseknert/116056950299738296

Clankbrained techbros, watching somebody with two sock puppets on their hands hitting a homeless person with a tree branch: socks and puppets were invented so society needs to accept this new reality and adapt.

What if the sock puppets are actually intelligent but in a way we cannot yet comprehend. What are our ethical responsibilities in a world with far more socks than humans, that could become puppets at any time. We need to invest in responsible sock darning and better puppeteer training. But the beating continues, our clankbrained assailant yelling “ethically this is a gray area it’s very complicated”. The victim may or may not have been pleading for their life. They’re silent now so who can say.

When you think about it, he said from the podium next to the flowers and candles a month later, it really it’s the machines that - pardon me, the machines _who_ - make googly-eyes and little pompoms that are really to blame for this tragedy. And the real victim here is all of us. Society.

These two images are the entire story of open source software support in this world, in a nutshell. Exhibit one is the list of companies who are sponsoring the Linux Foundation, a murderer's row of the largest and most powerful hosting and services companies in the world. Exhibit two is one dude scrambling to keep the lights on after a raid failure because KTLO for the servers that everyone uses to _download Linux_ are "outside the scope" of the Linux Foundation's "main duties".

Speaking as a parent my current take on internet age verification laws is that after the state starts putting the Epstein class in prison en masse then maybe we can start taking anything else you say about protecting children seriously.

@futurebird so, uhThat reads like "one drive in a mirroring raid pair failed" - as in, one of two drives that things are simultaneously recorded to". In that scenario, "installing new hard drives" means the system reboots and formats the new drives, which absolutely makes sense. It doesn't explain what happened to the other drives.

My daughter is struggling with job applications where they ask you for a long list of technologies and being the tech person in the house I'm taking the brunt of it. "Joomla isn't real. HTML is real, Javascript is real, Joomla isn't real. Nobody would call anything that. It sounds like the name of the villain in a movie where a poodle wins a beauty contest. Why are tech people capitalizing every other letter? Tell people to get their shit together."

"Why are they asking teenagers for proficiency with Meta? There are zero real teenagers on Meta. Oh, I guess Instagram... What is a Slack? Oh, it's just Discord for people who care about interest rates. What is a Jira. Tech people need to stop naming things, this is stupid."

"Joomla, Drupal ... is Drupal like RuPaul's depressed alter ego? RuPaul's Eeyore? Look, I work on a computer that's a combination of dabean and cinnamon, I know tech people are all weirdos but why are you like this? You expect me to believe that something called "InMagic DB/Textmate" is real and not just somebody ran out of ideas? Yeah fine Deh Bee Ahn. I'm calling it "da bean".

@tante I think more specifically, the idea that any technology is "inevitable" is a propaganda exercise trying to create a specific political, economic and market outcome by denying the whole idea of choice and agency.

Once you realize it’s not “age verification”, but actually “identity verification”, then it’s easy to understand that the real goal is “papers, please” for the entire internet.

I’ve been thinking about this for days. Incredible stochastic algorithm, gets more reliable the larger your input, incredibly fast, trivial to implement and deterministic on its inputs. It really has so much going for it.(Via @jonathankoren )

@briankrebs Shadow IT emerges from a desire to keep the corporate organism functioning while sidestepping whatever the rules of the organization actually say to generate the outcomes the organization wants. Agentic AI services reiterate the same ruleset that brought shadow IT into existence while extracting a per-token tithe cost without accountability for those outcomes or wants.Or, put differently, "vampires are the new kidneys, change my mind."

@briankrebs You've seen "seeing like a software company", the riff on "Seeing Like A State": https://www.seangoedecke.com/seeing-like-a-software-company/Shadow IT - and all shadow systems in any large organization - emerge directly from this legibility-vs-effectiveness tradeoff, reclaiming operational effectiveness at the real cost of operational visibility. But "agentic AI" offers an illusory version of both - offering 'legibility' but only as spend, offering effectiveness but only via uncertainty. And these are not the same.
