some people will say: “stupid” or other ableist slurs dont actually mean their ableist usages anymore! in fact, i often have been told it to my face. this includes “i didnt mean it like that” when someone uses ableist slurs, not realizing they are ableistand yet at the same time, me talking about ableism is REGULARLY met with: “that’s retarded” by randos who don’t wanna hear what i have to saythese things are very linked even if it might not seem like it, imho

if words are actively in use in a derogatory, slur-nature, then you can’t really claim “i didn’t mean that in the slur way”, especially when attributed to others. at that point you’re just empowering, reinforcing the mindset that leads to use of said slurs, and contributing to a structural norm of ableist slurs being acceptable

this does not mean i do not believe slurs can be reclaimedi do not however, think that most slurs of the ableist nature, have any value in being reclaimedwhen the entire purpose of a slur was to hurt peoplevia ableism, how can you redefine it in a way that doesnt reinforce the slur and embolden structural harassment and ableism?i dont think the identity argument tracks, either, for most words. “autistic” is maybe the only exception i’ve seen that truly… makes sense? to meunlike most of them, it had a slur usage and also has a usage in declaration of identityregardless, i acknowledge it’s a complicated field to converse about as well

long story short, i don’t think you can redefine the slur “stupid”, for instance in a meaningful, positive mannerif you want a word to usee for a different thing, i feel like making up and coining a new word is just a better ideai can think of MANY ableist slurs that meet this criteria, where there isn’t a single meaning i am aware of with positive usage in any format. there’s just no value in reclaiming them because the entirety of the word is used for ableist mean
