@cwebber ideally there would be some standard metadata associated with files that would tell you the type, in exactly the same way that the filename string itself is standard metadata associated with a file ("standard" in the sense that every file can be assumed to have it, and completely different OSs can assume this metadata exists).of course, that's more or less what the string `.exe` was on DOS computers in the 80s, and now here we are.

@karen grammatical gender is actually pretty uncommon worldwide. only indo-european languages other than english (and also afrikaans apparently) really have gendered nouns. also note that english does in fact have a verb conjugation system! you add -s for the 3rd person plural (except for a small class of modal verbs) and add -ed for the past tense!
