@karen you could learn Elm! but yes javascript is both shitty and genuinely useful for building software that people use

@kaniini nah, I can imagine a couple of reasonable arguments in favor of the policy (basically, I think there's a good chance it would prove to have a lower death rate compared to the 18-drinking-age case, if you did the research, and there's no reason why the age of majority has to be the same for everything). personally, I'm willing to take the tradeoffs in favor of a 18 or even younger drinking age, but that doesn't mean there's no case for it.

@kaniini I always mentally-replace "nazi" with "person I have a political disagreement with"

@kaniini although I'm not sure we actually disagree on this point, I said that my own position was that the drinking age should be 18 or earlier, just that there's counterarguments that aren't entirely unresonable

@pixelfed does "North America" imply "Canada", with it's pretty-good but still less-than-1st-amendment-good freedom of speech protections?

@lambda_meadow @GinnyMcQueen @funkwhale yeah, Funkwhale looks like an interesting software project, but the fact that its developers are concerned with restricting the political expression of users of the software is very concerning for an ostensibly free software project (defining what things are racist is *extremely* political)

@lambda_meadow @GinnyMcQueen @funkwhale I'm still trying out Funkwhale myself, so I don't know what I think of it. But if I think it's a useful and valuable piece of software, and given that its' AGPL 3 licensed, I might be interested in forking it so that developers who refuse to conform to its creators' intersectional leftist political ideology have a place to contribute code

@lambda_meadow @GinnyMcQueen @funkwhale I mean for christ's sake every other damn hip hop song for the past 30 years has included the word "nigga" in it - do you purport to design funkwhale in such a way as to force every user to make exactly the same political decision about whether or not that is racist!?

@funkwhale your community's values are anti-freedom and tyrannical wrapped up in the worst kind of feminine care for the ostensibly weak. I'm politically concerned with building software communities that value freedom. thankfully Funkwhale is a GPL project so it can be legitimately forked, but it's still a bad thing for the ecosystem when its (current) developers proudly display the anti-meritocracy manifesto

@funkwhale I'm not trying to change anyone's mind here, but rather signal to other people who like what #funkwhale seems to be doing but find its politics unacceptable, and try to form an alternate community around it

@plausocksWhenever I hear about a place run by women, I wonder if the women are figureheads put in place so they can market their business as female-run (which has legal benefits), with co-owning men doing much of the actual work.
