@wjmaggos @briannawu Only according to the truly illiberal—ie, the right wing hype machine and their “centrist” apologists.

@MPgh @statmonkey @StillIRise1963 They ARE. I was once chased through some public gardens by a swan. If I hadn’t had an umbrella with me, I’m not sure how that would have ended, but opening it in the critter’s face several times seemed to freak him out enough that I escaped with most of my dignity and all of my bones intact. (Apparently swans have been known to break bones by striking people with their wings. I swear, I am not making this up.)

@mekkaokereke @mickeleh as a white woman in a fairly prosperous suburb, I have never waited in line longer than 30 minutes (and that was exceptional). To cast my vote. Registering to vote, early voting, absentee ballot? All trivially easy and convenient. I was over 50 years old before I learned how different the experiences of Black, Latina, and poor friends were. (Thank you social media, for teaching me how not-universal my life experiences are.)

@VictorLange @Tengrain How well do you imagine we’ll be able to do that, building new democratic structures, under fascism?Seriously. I’m all for alternatives. But start local on those, and don’t split the vote when opposing actual fucking fascists. Please, dear gods, please.

@Wolven Damn. I am sorry to hear you’re sick. (I’m afraid I already knew about the country.)

@Wolven Done. I included a phrase from Mike Masnick in TechDirt that I’m sharing here, as I thought it summed up the issue well:“KOSA’s enforcement mechanism allows state Attorneys General to decide what is ‘harmful’ content and to force companies to remove it. This mechanism means that state AGs become censors for any content they dislike, including (as admitted directly by Heritage Foundation and Senator Blackburn) any content that admits that trans people exist.”

@gerrymcgovern I remember hearing once that at that time (20 years ago?) we could avert much of the harms of climate change by reducing our energy usage to 1970s levels, and thinking, hey, I grew up then, and it was hardly primitive! This is doable, people!But of course, we didn’t, and not only doesn’t that calculation take into account the 20 years of continued CO2 emissions, it doesn’t account for our increased inequalities. The poor deserve more; the rich MUST take less. 😕

@fcktheworld587 @gerrymcgovern On a global scale, most of us ARE rich. I am certainly NOT making the argument that degrowth is irrelevant for the rest of us. For those who travel by plane, every flight emits about a year’s worth of CO2. Ordinary Americans consume many times the resources of Europeans, let alone Africans. We DO need to make society-wide changes. Eating the billionaires won’t be enough if we’re unwilling to end our dependence on cars, etc.

@futurebird @jonquass seriously. It’s willful paranoia.

@futurebird @rlstone4dems I’ve learned how white people (like me) really, really want racism to be about evil racist individuals. That makes it into a “them” problem, saving us from recognizing that it’s an “us” problem.😕I was in my 50s before I grasped that racism is a white-person problem that was very much my business—via structural racism at minimum.You were 5. This is why I need to listen to you when you analyze it. Expertise.

@futurebird another observation, as a fat woman: this is only true if our body type conforms to expected norms. If we’re fat or large breasted, there is no safe casual work clothing. Only business formal is enough of an apology for our appearance—no alternatives are fully acceptable.

@escamoteur @mekkaokereke Retired teacher here. It’s not just money, it’s the working conditions. Not enough prep time, admin doesn’t have your back, and there’s a chill wind blowing through the classroom if you care about your kids.Teachers know the importance of mentoring and support, but there’s not enough of it, even before taking on the problem of implicit bias against students and teachers of Color.The problem is both salaries and RESPECT.

@futurebird 100% this. …I tried just now to compose sentences in agreement with your point, but all my attempts to put into clear, concrete language the implications are so horrifying and depressing that even thinking them makes me nauseous. I can’t write such nihilistic things before breakfast, I just can’t.Never again IS now. _Here_ and now. And it didn’t have to be this way.

@futurebird @quinn this is so true. I became a fan of Facebook when a good friend was widowed. It’s not that her posts substituted for the outpouring of love she got during the day, but I saw so many posts from her in the middle of the night. When she couldn’t sleep, at 2 AM, her friends were still “there.”Now, however, in the jumble of random videos, ads, and clickbait, I doubt a grieving widow could find company any better than a late-night infomercial. 😕
