@tek @daringfireball what are you even talking about? They wouldn’t have access to anything that’s not already public. The heck do you mean by, “cheat the API”? Buddy they’re *seperate servers*. They don’t have the logins to the mastodon servers. And again, the activitypub protocol doesn’t expose anything that’s not *already* public. What you’re saying is akin to accusing them of going to steal your e-mails, when you’re on a completely different server.

@tek @daringfireball I don’t think you know what a straw man is.Data being *pushed* instead of fetched does not change its contents. It’s still the same data. Show me examples of personal data that FB will be able and to get when they’re in the federation vs right now though scraping. You’re moving the goalpost. You started off claiming FB can somehow get more data (without any sort of facts). But yes, how dare they use the same protocol that other mastodon instances use, I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@mjg59 exactly! To illustrate: that’s why the team that did the Ocarina of Time decompilation requires you to have the originals’ ROM. Their script only assist in decompilation, it doesn’t offer the decompiled source code.

@BrodieOnLinux in Hbomberguy’s it’s not a singling out. He’s illustrating the problem from multiple angles, using 5 main examples.

@mjg59 from what I gather the exploit was on the registration side, so afterwards one would still use E2E encryption. IIRC they open sourced the way they broke into it?

@mjg59 oh yeah that makes sense. Though isn’t that risk inherent in any sort of open(ish) protocol? Like if you control the client, you control… information.

@mjg59 oh for sure. They have pretty solid device attestation. I just mean *if* iMessage was an open platform that officially supports third party clients, that problem would be inherent. An evil actor could make an app that hijacks the messages and forward it to EvilCorp.

@foone hoe many tokens do you need to have posted to make something decent like that? I can imagine you’d need to post a ton to even get some legible output.

@foone you can run a browser vm through WASM! I think if you do a simple Linux box you could get away with it.
