       @mpweiher and vc (32-bit MIPS) as the last one, here you see "HI" used as a MIPS-specific register: TEXT   main+0(SB),0,$8 MOVW   j-8(SP),R7 MOVW   $1,R5 JMP    ,4(PC) JMP    ,2(PC) JMP    ,10(PC) ADDU   $1,R5,R5 SGT    $42,R5,R2 BEQ    R2,-3(PC) MOVW   $3,R6 DIV    R6,R5, MOVW   HI,R3 BEQ    R3,2(PC) ADDU   R5,R7,R7 JMP    ,-10(PC) MOVW   R7,R1 RET    , RET    , END    ,

       @mpweiher All of these are superficially very similar, but there are already some optimizations done in the compiler stage, e.g. using "INC" on x86 instead of adding 1 on the RISC architectures. But this is not a higher-level representation e.g. on the level of LLVM IR. Some stuff is unified, "such as left-to-right assignment order for instruction operands and the synthesis of macro instructions such as MOVE" (from [1]).[1] https://9p.io/sys/doc/asm.html

       @mpweiher There's an example of the abstraction level given in [2]:"For example, on the 68020 the object file may specify a MOVE instruction but the loader will decide just which variant of the MOVE instruction — MOVE immediate, MOVE quick, MOVE address, etc. — is most efficient."Indeed, it's pretty weird at first sight...[2] https://9p.io/sys/doc/comp.html

       Say hello to our "new" free hardware 80-core cluster – these are Dell/Wyse 3040 thin clients (quadcore Z8350 Atom, 2 GB RAM, 8 GB eMMC, 1 GB Ethernet, only 10x10x3 cm^3 in size) which will be used for student experiments with distributed operating systems. Maybe we can revive Amoeba and build a small Plan9 cluster...#OS #Amoeba #Plan9 #Cluster

       In 1978, Prof. Verbaeten ported 7th Ed. Unix to the Motorola 68000 at KU Leuven in Belgium. This port is not archived at TUHS, only mentioned here:https://eng.kuleuven.be/en/stories/50-years-of-computer-science-engineeringhttps://museum.cs.kuleuven.be/misc/Tim_Ameye_Sander_Van_Loock_40-jaar.pdf (p. 12)There's also a paper describing the port which is not available:Verbaeten, P., Berbers, Y. (1983). Porting Unix. In: Proceedings of UNICOM Conference, San Diego. If you happen to have pointers to any of this, I would be happy to hear from you!#retrocomputing #unix #MC68000 #kuleuven

       @aud @SnoopJ @ricci The kernel source is in /usr/sys, the config in conf/mch.s can be switched between a PDP11/40 and 11/45, similar to 6th edition. Warren Toomey's apout seems to be able to run some of the included binaries, but I can't get the C compiler to produce an output file.
