@lightweight it definitely introduces an inherent bias but is it accurate to say that it automatically creates an incentive? It can but I think that would depend on the business

@cassidyjames I really love the 14" form factor of my Lenovo Thinkpad but was looking to see if there's anything like it specifically built for Linux. I was looking at Slim, Star, and Laptops w/Linux since they all fund elementary but could find anything specific. I found a 3K one from Slim (I think it was them) but the DPI didn't seem quite right

@cassidyjames yeah I think if I'm going to end up purchasing something for a new personal device (the reason for the search) I might just go right back to another Thinkpad. Just torn if I want cheap or something developer grade

To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous. (Please boost for reach)

Several weeks into the #TwitterMigration it seems clear to me the value of Mastodon is not that it is a Twitter replacement, but that it is a gateway technology to decentralization. Mastodon has flaws, I'm not claiming it's perfect, but many criticisms I've seen stem from expecting centralized services from a decentralized structure. It's up to us to try and explain the differences and set expectations for what alternative services can look like.

Apparently I never made an #introduction so with the massive influx of people what better time than now to make one! I'm a father, husband, and free software wonk. Proud to support @elementary and @purism by paying for software. I pay the bills as a #frontend software engineer. I actually studied #history and #polisci in college so my interests and feed definitely skew those directions. Former tech bootcamper (many moons ago).

Ok Fediverse, one thing I absolutely love about the Birdsite is watching historians and other academics share their work in public to improve our understanding. I think I'm just gonna start cross posting some things I find interesting as I come across them. Maybe we can make a new hashtag? For now I'm gonna just reuse one from Birdsite that Dr. Karin Wulf created. #history #VastEarlyAmerica

“Many people today believe that you can’t understand the American Revolution without understanding anything about Haiti. You can’t understand the American Revolution without understanding anything about what was going on in the Spanish world.”From an interview with Professor Julius S Scott III about the interconnected nature of the Atlantic trade, and it's impact on Black culture. http://www.publicbooks.org/julius-s-scott-iii-1955-2021-the-common-wind/#history#VastEarlyAmerica

Very heartening to see the mass of #academics coming here from in the great #twittermigration. FWIW there are a few academics based instances here in the Fediverse, I'll try to link to them. The one I can think of off the top of my head is https://hci.social/about

@freedcreative@merveilles.town I quite like this because it can be used to include the various open access licenses that are not officially blessed by the OSI.

@killyourfm oooo I like that phrase "virtual living room". Feels like a nice way to describe how we should want our socials to be 😀
