@frameworkcomputer it's a nice glowing recommendation and I absolutely agree with the line of thinking but at the same time YIKESWhat an insane place to be in.

@BrodieOnLinux oh good a recap.I really did try to watch PDP's video because I wanted to know what he actually recommended - but it was my first PDP video and ... uh ... his style is not for me, we'll say.

@BrodieOnLinux When I was younger I would've called it bad and had a hard-line opinion on this guy I don't watch. But these days I just acknowledge that there are all sorts of different people with all sorts of different tastes. And if this makes a bunch of people who otherwise wouldn't engage with the Linux community give it a try, well that's a positive in the long run, isn't it?

@BrodieOnLinux whenever I watch any sort of PC gamer media I get the impression that there's a whole subset of PC owners who use their PCs ONLY for games and a web browser. And they'll blow like 2 grand on a rig for just that.

@BrodieOnLinux I'm too out of the loop to know if fent is another window manager or just what people are calling fentanyl now.

@BrodieOnLinux oof, now that's a take.I have one app on my work-issued Windows PC that immediately steals focus when scrolled over and it's a GIGANTIC pain in the ass. I end up having to minimize it just so I can use drag-and-drop with other apps.

@BrodieOnLinux this is a write-up on it but the short version is a really good RFID tag implementation, as others have already noted.https://www.seikotags.com/uniqlo-rfid-checkout-experience-and-how-its-really-done/

@BrodieOnLinux I assumed they were named after family trees (what with all the parents, children and siblings) and not trees. So for the answer we'd have to go back to the 1750's.

@BrodieOnLinux as an aside, I feel like a recurring theme with people on YouTube trying to make videos about whether Linux Desktops are viable it's always "can I do my incredibly specific video production workflow that I intentionally built around Windows software?" And usually when there's a problem, that's where it breaks down. But for people who aren't capturing and editing videos, these hot takes are all but useless.

@BrodieOnLinux I feel like JavaScript gets a lot of crap for this sort of stuff but it's always like "look how confusing this is when you intentionally use it wrong!"Sure a lot of this stuff should just throw errors. But by the same token most people have never encountered it because you'd have to have something go TRAGICALLY wrong with your code to end up in these situations.

@BrodieOnLinux imposter syndrome comes from living all the hard work and failure that goes into your own output, but only seeing your peers' output without any of the work.

@BrodieOnLinux When I switched to Linux full-time I just installed Ubuntu and it was already defaulting to Wayland at that point. I didn't really even know about the ~discourse~ surrounding X11 vs Wayland until like 6 months later.I've never had any major issues, and I've been running with fractional scaling the whole time and using screen capture tools like Zoom for work. I think I needed to set a startup parameter for Firefox way back then but that's about all the work-arounds I've had to do

@stux I would love to but my family is here and my wife would never leave her parents. And they would never leave here both because of their age, and because /their/ parents came to the US to escape a holocaust. It is very hard for them to understand that things have changed and the US now isn't what it was then.

@BrodieOnLinux @vkc One point in here I want to spotlight is this notion that computers aren't really making generational leaps for user-level stuff. Personally I feel like the last big hardware advance that actually impacted non-gaming users was the widespread adoption of SSDs.Super-duper fast ray tracing and video compression doesn't matter to non-gaming users, but the computer booting faster sure does.

@BrodieOnLinux I'm going to go with "correct but feels wrong" because I work in web dev and web dev is often iterative based on visitor feedback and data. It's critical to make sure that your code is functional and secure FIRST and then iterate your way to a good UX later.
