@lain This one again. I still haven't read the paper, but my first thought was of a crank who used to post on sci.crypt a lot about how all functions in security applications need to be injective (indeed, bijective - he really had a thing about permutations). My second thoughts are in the directions of numeric precision and thermodynamics. Time-reversal symmetry of physics doesn't mean you can unscramble an egg.

@lain @harblinger I'd endorse this one, and have heard others say the same. Wonder where it fits on the log plot.

@lain It's going to end up "cancelled" over "alignment" issues, and probably not even the most obvious ones. Like maybe it'll come out favouring coal burning too much to be palatable.

@lain It took me many years to figure out that I don't like duck. Because I don't *hate* it, I just don't really like it much. I'd see it on a restaurant menu, think "That sounds fun to try!" and then be disappointed, and I was pretty far along in life before I realized that it goes that way every time. I thought I was just getting duck dishes that were individually not very good.

@h4890 @nicholas @lain Yeah, they're called Canada geese in English. Not sure I'd care to eat one, given their filthy habits and likely toughness.

@lain They did. I stayed in one, in Tokyo, because I hadn't been warned. Literature rack in the room full of stuff that would probably have been illegal back home.

@bob I'd caution strongly against this interpretation because people will use it to draw incorrect conclusions about copyright and "citation."It's all very well to make theoretical statements *among theorists* about generation being "equivalent" to a search engine (after all, everything is equivalent to searching the Library of Babel); but lay persons will assume that means it's searching real documents that actually exist and that it necessarily copied from, and that way lies trouble.
