The rise of the Fediverse is only accelerating as companies like Mozilla and WordPress make moves to support it. Even Meta is rumored to be working on a decentralized social network. But there's one particular start-up that seems determined to go its own way.I spoke with @tchambers and @evan about what's driving the Fediverse migration - and the obstacles that can thwart some would-be users.https://spectrum.ieee.org/mastodon-social-media#fediverse #mastodon

What I want is, an LLM I can train with my own copy. First company to deliver that will have my money for sure. Actually, I should get messing with the one Facebook put out recently that can be run locally. Maybe that'll do it. https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/17/23644501/microsoft-copilot-ai-office-documents-microsoft-365-report#AI #LLM

Even more concerning, users are reporting seeing other users chats in #ChatGPT right now, and sometimes even being able to open them. Huge problem if it's true. #ai

Data privacy is going to be a key concern for AI services. People and companies will be throwing a TON of data into these including things they want kept private. OpenAI isn't exactly showing leadership here. #ChatGPT https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/11wkw5z/has_chatgpt_or_me_been_hacked_ive_never_had_these/

Roblox has big plans for AI game generation, and it’s amazing stuff to think about. Games remain an art form with a very high technical hurdle. Tools like this could really, if they work, could truly open game design to everyone. https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/03/are-robloxs-new-ai-coding-and-art-tools-the-future-of-game-development/ #gamedev #roblox

This article from the April 1998 issue of Computer Gaming World magazine debates the merits of frame rate in 3D games, saying there's no reason to go beyond 60 FPS. I'm sure that certainly seemed true at the time!#retrocomputing #retrogaming

I'm starting to think more about the labor automation / AI thing as I will be writing on it soon, which led me to read the OpenAI paper that caused those "AI to impact 300 million jobs" headlines.Thing is, the paper makes no real effort to engage in practical problems of LLMs. Will it be economically feasible to roll out LLMs this way? Will LLMs become more accurate, or more capable of reproducing desired results? Is it possible to design human interfaces that work for these tasks? #ai #openai

There is a big gap between the absolute garbage that is ChatGPT's interface and user experience, and *it takes all the jobs!* Everyone always assumes that the other person's job is easier and less relevant. In this case, I think the people building the models are vastly underestimating the challenges that face software engineers, UI designers, hardware architects and engineers, and so on.

The Musked Man is on a new crusade to save us all from the "cringe" depths of LinkedIn with his latest venture, "X Hiring". Actually, this could be extremely helpful. If you see a company hiring on X, it's probably best not to waste your time applying.https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/elon-musks-x-is-going-to-take-on-microsoft-owned-cringe-platform-linkedin-to-make-hiring-cool-again#X #twitter #linkedin

For IEEE Spectrum, I spoke with Dell's Yoon Lee about the quest to achieve perfect motion in a computer display.Think it's simple? It's not. Modern LCD displays still show significant flaws. Completely eliminating them means solving problems across the entire image pipeline, from rendering graphics to connection standards to the display panel itself. https://spectrum.ieee.org/computer-display-500-hertz#pchardware #pcgaming

Sony Vaio PCV-90. Awesome Windows 95 computer. As I recall it cost $3,000 - my family must have been awfully convinced about the potential of computers, because that was a heck of a lot. Of course it was obsolete within 2 years.#retrogaming #retrocomputing #windows95 #sony
