Hey, if you're following me because I'm a #Prosody developer, you should know that fellow dev @zash is also here on the fediverse πŸ™‚We've also been considering an official account for the project. Interest? #XMPP

@celia Snikket isn't really designed with anonymous access in mind.I'll have a think about the easiest way to approach this... πŸ™‚ (a separate web-only Prosody may be the easiest answer, for example)@gabor @nebunez

@jrThe Prosody config itself is easy:VirtualHost "guest.example.com" authentication = "anonymous" modules_enabled = { "bosh", "websocket", "conversejs" }Prosody will automatically block federation for anonymous users to prevent anyone using your server as a spam relay.More docs: https://prosody.im/doc/anonymous_loginshttps://modules.prosody.im/mod_conversejsThe tricky part as always is dealing with stuff outside Prosody - certs, reverse proxies, etc.https://prosody.im/doc/setting_up_bosh@gabor @celia @nebunez

@cell At least there are bridges between #XMPP, #Matrix and #IRC - the three open protocols in your image. Multiple systems are fine if interoperable.

@ademalsasa Worth pointing out that the primary audience for xmpp.org is a technical one - it contains all the specifications for software developers to build their libraries and apps on top of #XMPP, and have it interoperable with the rest of the XMPP ecosystem. It does have a few pages to help guide non-technical users, but a more user-focused intro to the network can be found at https://joinjabber.org/

"I sent you an OMEMO encrypted message but your client doesn’t seem to support that."Ever seen this sad story in #XMPP land? But your client does support #OMEMO? Such issues can be tricky to debug sometimes. We just published a new #Prosody module, mod_debug_omemo. It adds a unique link to the end of these messages. When opened, it will reveal OMEMO debug info that can help identify why the message couldn't be decrypted.https://modules.prosody.im/mod_debug_omemoThanks to @zash for some last-minute testing and fixes πŸ™‚

Hopefully mod_debug_omemo will lead to some useful insights and improvements of OMEMO handling across #XMPP clients! It's a very new module, so if you try it please report any issues (the Prosody chatroom is a great place to do that).

@krisMatrix is not XMPP version 2. Both protocols have very similar goals, but they have very different designs, and are developed by different people. Both projects are active and one is not a replacement of the other. A third project with similar goals as Matrix and XMPP is Delta Chat - except instead of inventing a new protocol they are building on top of email. All three systems are active open federated networks built around open-source software.@stefan

@hyde Port 5443 won't open until certificates are fetched (which only needs 80->5080 to be proxied). You inspired me to work on some improvements today, starting with https://github.com/snikket-im/snikket-cert-manager/pull/6 and https://github.com/snikket-im/snikket-web-proxy/pull/9 - we should be able to get those into the next release.Meanwhile check out https://github.com/snikket-im/snikket-server/blob/master/docs/setup/troubleshooting.md#certificate-problems@snikket_im

@snikket_imAlso worth noting about other #XMPP software:- Jitsi Meet does use log4j in some components. Though it appears it probably wasn't vulnerable, the team have published a new release and it is definitely sensible to upgrade!- Openfire was vulnerable and they have published a new release to which everyone should upgrade: https://discourse.igniterealtime.org/t/openfire-4-6-5-released/91108 (a workaround is also detailed)- Tigase is another notable server written in Java, but it does not use log4j, so is not affected.

@Mirk0dexThere is a list of providers, ranked by some transparent criteria, available at https://providers.xmpp.net/Everyone's criteria are different, so it's hard to make a one-size-fits-all list, but hopefully it's a good start!

@lil5XMPP is as encrypted-by-default as Matrix. Specifically, encrypted-by-default is a property of the app rather than the protocol. It's fine to not use/recommend apps that don't encrypt by default, but not using XMPP because they exist is like not using the modern web because some legacy browsers still use HTTP.FWIW, easy-to-use + encrypted-by-default apps + lightweight self-hostable server describes well what we're building at @snikket_im@dsfgs @chbmeyer @hackernews @fabyk @olamundo

@NatCorYou can kinda use the Snikket "circles" feature to achieve this: https://snikket.org/service/help/features/circles/However, I don't believe a group you can join just with a link, especially published on a website, meets the definition of "private". Private groups generally require you to explicitly grant access to people you want to participate - that's the behaviour most people expect. Some analysis of group types is available here: https://docs.modernxmpp.org/rationale/#group-chats@lil5 @dsfgs @chbmeyer @hackernews @fabyk @olamundo
