This new phishing tactic might be the smartest I’ve ever seen: The note was drafted by the scammer, but due to PayPal’s presentation of it, it reads like a warning from PayPal. The phone number is the scammer’s. Tell your family members. Seriously.

I keep seeing posts here suggesting Mastodon users should not promote their commercialized work here.May I just say, this is demented. This isn't a starving artist community*. It's a follow-based social network. Don't wanna hear it? Click the unfollow button. But don't tell others what they should or shouldn't be saying to their own friends. *What's great is that if you WANT your Fediverse experience to feel like a starving artist community, you can curate that w/o forcing it on others.

Me: I personally prefer #Vim, but the best engineers I know regard #eMacs as an essential tool of the trade. Vim person: eMacs is built by a crazy person!Me: Okay. Btw, how are you connected to your network right now?Vim person: Ethernet! Why use anything else?!

@clive @anildash yep. The podcasting genre was originally dominated by conversations. Now it’s a lot of stuff that is produced like a scripted radio show. My rule is, if it’s obvious that the speakers are simply reading content to me, I would much rather read it myself than have someone slowly say it to me. Hence, I’ve never finished an audiobook (except for David Sedaris, the master).

@clive many years ago, I fiddled with a to-do list app that would have its own file format (.tsk). The premise of the application was that, because most of the things on my to-do list were actually requests other people had made of me, those people should directly populate my list; I shouldn't have to be responsible for documenting their request. So, everyone would have write privileges. I could rank the list, and people could see how many tasks were on my list ahead of theirs.

@clive the fuss over the appearance of “historic” homes is so childish. Most “historic” homes (mine included) have zero individual historic notoriety, and are just as old as the homes around them, but are more charming (read:expensive).

@lauraolin I drafted a response ridiculing you for not growing them yourself in your own back yard, but then I read about how to grow ramps, and it turns out, you are not to blame.

@Loukas @AndersGottlieb @anderspuck I liked ISW’s reports last spring but soon noticed a propensity to call attention to every new development that supported a past analysis. There’s something icky about that. It feel like it violates intel analysis decorum.

I’m hiring. My team, which is overseeing the modernization of IRS IT with $10 billion+ from the Inflation Reduction Act, needs a coordinator. Someone early career who is beginning to see how much room for improvement there is with Federal IT, and is equipped for a high-profile mission. Please boost. https://openopps.usajobs.gov/tasks/5842

@anderspuck I keep seeing people on Twitter posting photos of a destroyed rail bridge and saying it’s the result of the Chongar strike. Only, there is no rail bridge at Chongar. The Crimea-Kherson rail bridge is at Ataman. Do you know which bridge was targeted?

@clive not an architect, but tall buildings need to sway, and stone doesn’t. So, no stone skyscrapers! The author is a NIMBY who hates skyscrapers because they offend his aesthetic sensibilities: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2020/jul/11/skyscrapers-wasteful-damaging-outmoded-time-to-stop-tall-buildings

@clive I assume you do this in order to find things to write about. How does this gold panning process work for those of us who make a living off of something other than the metaphorical gold here?

@clive I’ll present, without evidence, two other possible contributing factors:- the decline of corporate writing. There are far fewer reports to print now than their were decades ago. Nobody writes anymore! They just make slide decks, which make no sense when printed. - the disappearance of assistants. Printers suck. No one wants to deal with them. It was far easier to get printed materiel when you could have someone do it for you. Now everyone has to do it themselves, and it sucks.

@clive @anildash exciting—del.icio.us was one of my true loves of the web—but, each user hosts their own instance??
