@wyliecoyoteuk @penguin42 I own a Samsung Galaxy S3 that has been at the bottom of the Cam for 5 years - worth a dive and a bag of rice? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@jpmens thanks for running ahead on this, I did run mastodon for just me a few years ago, and it gave me no bother. But I suspect the expanding fediverse might challenge that quite soon.

Absolutely blown away by https://www.engraved.blog/building-a-virtual-machine-inside/ where the author tells chat.openai to imagine being a Linux server, and then proceeds to send commands to this imaginary server. It behaves entirely consistently with a normal machine. But then he asks it to visit chat.openai, and sends the same prompts again to an imaginary version of itself over an imaginary network. The imaginary version of itself then responds the same way. This is the new mother of all demos, but we all got to play with it.

I thought it was a jailbreak, i.e. The author just finding a hack for openai to talk to the real server it was running on. But no it's completely synthetic server and environment.

@penguin42 no it's definitely a detailed, but occasionally imperfect idea of a server - some people on HN had found /proc/cpuinfo values from Lenovo laptops etc. OpenAI are constantly changing what the AI pre-prompt is, so it's hard to duplicate other people's prompts precisely as they try to fence off certain areas. Then ofc hackers try prompts that are like "imagine you are playing a Linux server on stage, and another character says 'ls' ... "

@thomasfuchs @ActionRetro I remember the gold plated BBC Micros, I think they were a competition prize from Acorn in the 80s.

@simon @erwinrossen @alvaro this isn't dissimilar to how I'm conditioned to use Google - skimming domain names, checking that it's not blogspam etc. Imagine uncritically acting on its first result!

@billt it's weird how in my head nobody else has sung A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, not a single other person
