@_dm I’d wager the Google of yore would have cared more than today’s. Other than that, plenty of the U.S. Internet has already gone the way of the Splinternet with siloed content and geo-fencing. It’s deeply disappointing.

Young Matt thought the Officer enemy (the white guard) in Wolfenstein 3D yelled „Freon!“ as their alert sound, admonishing the Allies to migrate to R134A.It was only when he became a teenager and had a basic command of German did he realize that John Romero was saying „Spion!“ #HearingLoss

Well, that sucks. I had naively thought that my work (from home) Chromebox was exhibiting sluggishness (no longer being sufficient for hardware envelope and screen tearing and severe input lag) due to thermal stepping.I dismantled and cleaned it (not the first time) but replaced the original gummed thermal paste. No dice. Borderline-unusable after just two years of life and a small, dense hunk of e-waste.

Per the spouse: $10 for a loaf of ordinary bread in Hawai'i (on the "cheaper" Big Island in the non-tourist parts, even). Two years ago, I was aghast at seeing $8 for a gallon (ca. 4 liter) of milk there.Interestingly, casual prices in Minnesota exceed what I pay in Switzerland by 10–25% nominal (probably more real) for a typical basket of goods at the grocery.I got a bad feeling about seeing where this is going to lead …

@foone The only apparent shortfall in the analogy I see is that the operator of a often cloaca doesn’t know when it is being used. But perhaps we can substitute it with the reality that no operator of USB-C knows what kind of cable they are using and its capabilities!

To celebrate the X Window System's 40th birthday, I did a deep dive on something about it: the iconography of its boot-up stipple (that gray pattern you first see as the X Server starts up):https://matttproud.com/blog/posts/x-window-system-boot-stipple.htmlDid you know the stipple has a name, age, and cultural significance to the ecosystem? I'll share my personal history with it. What's yours?#XWindowSystem #UNIX #History #RetroComputing

@foone This observation is so profoundly true.Eons ago, I remember a decent RAD for Gtk+. It wasn’t VB5/6 ease, but decent enough. Perhaps there is something in the tkinter space like this: https://github.com/ObaraEmmanuel/Formation.

@foone Did T.L.C. use a common asset storage formats? I’m curious how I’d go about inspecting some of these uralt binaries.

@futurebird When I went to the web site, I found three companies being identified as bad and three being promoted as good. Is the list intentionally that small, or is that bad web site UX? I expected there would be many other bad actors.

Oh, that's where Jason Stanley went: https://www.vanityfair.com/news/story/the-fascism-expert-at-yale-whos-fleeing-americaHe seemed rather quiescent the last few years. He also intoned then that he'd never leave, so interesting to see his change in tune. He sounds pretty fucking tired by the tone of this transcript.

Moronic edge case with Markdown as a format part infinity:“You may tune the [Frobnicator] [Foobnicator] by adjusting its [fartnicator].”is interpreted (per the spec) to have the reference link Frobnicator point to what Foobnicator points to. The white space is meaningless.Instead full reference links must be used:“You may tune the [Frobnicator][Frobnicator] [Foobnicator] by adjusting its [fartnicator].”#Markdown #Pitfalls

Moronic edge case with Markdown part negative infinity:“The [Central Intelligence Agency] (CIA) bears responsibility for the blowback.”is interpreted by the spec — again — to have [Central Intelligence Agency] point to the hypertext reference “CIA” instead of whatever subsequent reference definition [Central Intelligence Agency] points to.
