@10leej shit man. that's awful. I don't know how to explain that. I take it distrohacking didn't go to well last night? Can you port the Arch specific parts over to Gentoo or just git clone the Xmonad stuff?

@TooTankhaMooN I'm not on Gentoo now, but I've used it exclusively before. The biggest thing is removing software parts you don't need. If you exclusively use GTK for example, you can compile software without any support for Qt libraries. Arch is binary based, so you get a bloated package that includes support for everything. With Gentoo you build the package according to your needs and can reduce file sizes drastically, while optimizing the packages for your specific CPU architecture

@TooTankhaMooN same goes for the kernel. You can build a seriously lightweight and highly optimized kernel by removing support for drivers and hardware you know for certain you don't have. That was always my favorite part.

@coolbsd @ThiccGuy69 I’m honestly going to do it. Just gotta get resources in order and find a suitable provider. I’m set on it.

@la_ninpre @la_ninpre we're going to recreate this instance over on a community run server in the coming week

@10leej what's your matrix ID? SSV and I have a new group to discuss the succession.

to anyone who follows me on here, the community is going to start and maintain a new instance of this server. I'd recommend requesting your archive from Mastodon (go to Preferences -> Import and Export -> Request Your Archive) and when the community-run instance is production-ready, we'll post an announcement. Spread the word! Distrotoot will live on!

Update: we have a brand identity, and we may be posting some teaser images soon. We've purchased a domain name, and we're spinning up a VPS today. We have custom firewall and server protection rules nearly finalized. We will be compiling Mastodon from source, so we have control over updates and can stay as close to upstream as possible with minimal downtime. We won't be sharing the domain name of the instance just yet so we have time to thoroughly beta test before going live.

@radhitya no, we're creating a whole new instance maintained by some of the mods from Distrotoot. When Distrotoot ends, most of its users will migrate to the new one.

@radhitya Of course! It won't be ready for a few days at least, so I'd recommend following an alt of @coolbsd @SplitShockVirus or @syscrash to know when it's up and running

@syscrash @linuxbey we’re waiting on the domain IP to propogate, and then we can enable Mastodon. We’re just about ready to flip the switch.
