@duponin Just to clarify: it is those *exact* values/settings from those pages that I tweaked. :)The one thing that isn't "obvious" from them is that I increased the number of postgreSQL connections, from the default 100, to 150. The rest was all about specifics of the server CPU/Ram etc. At first I tried to lower the amount of connections. That killed the server completely. If you have any source on admin tweaks for #Pleroma I'm all ears as I need to fill a knowledge gap that I have noticed. :)I also admin an instance of Friendica and it runs...umm...more "evenly" on CPU usage etc, and doesn't generate any errors, which is a thing the Pleroma instance does now and then (which leads me to think I have more tweaking to do).

Time for a refresher of an #introduction / #introductions as here are lots of new people.I can talk about anything, but these are some of the things I like:* Open-minded friendly people* Music - listens to most extreme #metal though I create an inverted amount of ambient tunes depending on how much metal I've listened to lately. The harder music I listen to, the more whale-sounds I create, apparently.* Gaming - both #ttrpg (since -83) and computer gaming* #privacy related topics* Most things that are IT related, though I have been nerding down on #infosec over the last years (which is also my main job role these days)* #photography - I take lots of pix* I love good #ux and giggle/despair at bad UX

@kinetix @Stan Hehe, I would definitely be interested in reading it. Not sure how much I could contribute though. When I’m looking at your instances they look ”for real”, where I only run an instance-of-one for me, hoping for the best, but if (read ”when”) I crash it, no one else get affected. 😂Having said that, I have been tweaking a few basic things and could definitely summarize those up in writing, if nothing else as it’d be good for when I’d ever need to set up another Pleroma instance. If any of that could be helpful for anyone else I should share it too.

@kinetix @Stan Over in the land of the Vikings I spent a full hour last night trying to enable a MRF ”reject” list on my instance. The hour was spent adding instances by doing tedious copy/paste, only to learn by the end of it all that I somehow turned off ALL federation and had to delete it all. There must be a setting I have missed that is on. Or off.

@Stan @kinetix My interface for it doesn’t look like that. I have basically one field to put them all in to, and for each one you put in you have to confirm the name by clicking it from a suggestion box. Each one takes some time, and I can’t add a bunch in one go, they have to be pasted (or, of course, written) manually.

@Stan @kinetix what is more worrying for me though is that I can’t seem to get rid of CPU spikes, which then leads to various error messages and my service completely stutters for quite a while. Before my postgreSQL tweaks it would lead to the server not responding to anything after a while, but after the postgreSQL tweaks it at least stays alive and after a while trickles back to normal. No idea how/why they appear. I run the “latest stable” in a pretty regular setup on Ubuntu with nginx in front, which I would assume isn’t an exotic setup, and it is all set up following the instructions on the official site.If you look at the attached screenshot of my bpytop from the console you can see an area of complete 100% CPU which then trickles off. During those spike areas it is nigh on impossible to post or to refresh. My memory of setting it up from the first time (a couple of versions ago) I had to fight hard to get it up to 10% CPU usage. These days it is rare it comes down to 10%.

For a “tweaker” and being someone who “re-skins” pretty much any GUI I can get my hands on, I have to say I’m really impressed with the amount of tweakable/style-able settings I have access to in #Akkoma / #Pleroma. Loving it!

If you wish to share links to content that come from the #BigTech services here in The #Fediverse, it is often appreciated if you convert the links in to #privacy respecting alternatives, without #tracking and boosting of said services. One easy way to do so is by installing the plugin/extension ”Privacy Redirect”, which is available for the big browsers (for free) and for Safari (for a fee).github.com/SimonBrazell/privacy-redirect

@FailForward I’m 5 episodes in so haven’t finished it, but so far it is doing a good job of being a teenage school detective drama dressed up in some very dark humour, to a level that it becomes cute. Reading that back it doesn’t sound awesome, but it is really quite entertaining, much thanks to the great lead actress who is doing a great job both visually and with fast witty and very dark comments on pretty much anything and everything. After the first episode I thought to myself that I would tire of her, and that it would wear thin quickly, but so far I can’t get enough of her. She is doing the anti-social awkwardness to such a degree it becomes adorable, both for her surroundings and the viewers. Daughter (13 in two weeks) loves it all too.

@FailForward what if updating makes me win more, things I do not know about yet, hidden gems of incredible functionality I had missed, and opening up to possibilities I can only dream about? What if something goes wrong when I am forced to update anyways? Should I not be ahead of the curve instead of being reactive? So many questions… 😆

Tomorrow is my first-borns 16th birthday. 3 days later it is Xmas Eve (that is when we celebrate Xmas in Sweden). 3 days after that it is my daughters 13th birthday. 4 days after that is New Years Eve. Any questions on why I find end of Dec somewhat stressful? 😬

@mxtthxwI also run my own instances (with me as the only user) and I appreciate my freedom more and more for each day that passes. It took some time to get going before there was an interesting flow of content, and I was “unknown” I didn’t federate with anyone off the bat, but as the following/followers have reached a critical mass I doubt one would notice a difference compared to being on a hosted instance, except that “local” is only me.@atomicpoet

@jimbob @mr_sterile @atomicpoet Sadly this is probably more about the real Mastodon flaw (which IMHO isn’t the lack of QT) but instead about Mastodon not loading replies in threads from users you don’t already follow or federate with. Nor does it reliably give notifications to a user that someone has commented on their post, as that setting is off by default. To many users, replies to their comments are invisible, even when the replies are visible to others.I have lost count of how many times I have answered questions asked by Mastodon users, with my reply being the first reply to the question, within minutes of the question being asked, and the thread just goes on and on, until someone 2 hours later say the exact same thing as I replied with within 2 minutes, and gets a “oh, thanks! Is THAT how it works? I see!” (and I go “doh”…). At first this confused me. After testing I have learnt it is just how Mastodon works. Most of the other services doesn’t work like that. This was the main reason for me deciding to try something else than Mastodon.

The answer is…: Zero (0). If you just start out, absolutely no one is actually federating with you. They don’t even know you exist. Until you yourself start following people on various instances, no one and I mean absolutely, no one, knows you exist. You better start following someone…but then, only the people on servers following you know you exist. That is how the fediverse works. You do NOT automatically federate with any/all servers out there, just because you exist.
